The Top 7 perform the songs of Mariah Carey

Submitted by The Critic on Tue, 2008-04-15 18:43.

Last week left more fans reeling as Michael Johns was viciously cut in an unexpected elimination that saw others safe who everyone believed would be in the bottom three.

Tonight the Top 7 are performing the songs of this weeks mentor - Mariah Carey Mariah Carey.

This could be a very interesting show. Mariah is a huge artist who has now matched the Beatles for most number ones. These contestants are either going to do well or really struggle if they don't pick the right song. It's going to be interesting in any case!

If you haven't already, why not join one of our Office Pools on the right and see if you can pick who is going and who is staying.

Also, If you need the voting numbers, they can be found here.

Here is tonight's recap:

David Archuleta

Yet another sleepy song from David Archuleta. He's certainly playing it safe this entire competition, pulling out songs every week that get his voters swooning. I wonder if they're going to get bored and desert him though.

Randy: "I was worried about tonight and you picked one of the toughest ones. But dude if you can sing, you can sing anything. That was the bomb!"

Paula: "It must feel great to hear Mariah singing your version"

Simon: "I just knew that was the song you would choose. I think it was very, very good. You set the benchmark. I think the guys are going to have an easier time tonight. You performed that very well."

Carly Smithson

I still really can't stand Carly's affected voice. She's a dime a dozen singer and I American Idol can certainly live without her.

Randy: "Once you hit the power parts it was good but you have to trust yourself on the lower parts."

Paula: "I actually like that you showed some vocal restraint at the beginning."

Simon: "I really wanted to hear you sing this song. The difficult part, I don't think you pulled it off. I think you're capable of it. I think you're wound up but I thought it was an ok version."

Ssyesha Mercado

Syesha possibly has one of the nicest voices to listen to in American Idol and she has improved week on week. Unfortunately I think some of the other personalities are overshadowing her.

Randy: "So, for the last couple weeks I said you pick the toughest songs. I like that you go for all of it every week. I gotta tell you something - you did a good job all things considered."

Paula: "I think you've been extremely smart. You're smart because you picked a song that not many people know so you're not compared to it. You're learning to not always power. Overall, tonight was unbelievably magical for you."

Simon: "Once again, technically it was very good. At this stage of the competition I don't think it's good that not a lot of people know the song. I think so far Davd Archuleta has stolen the show and he's the one to beat."

Brooke White

Brooke White

I think Brooke wants to go home. An incredibly stupid song choice. It would have been so much better if she'd had the band involved as they would have helped cover up her dreadful piano playing.

Randy: "I like the fact that you brought the singer-songwriter thing but the bridge threw me. Overall it was pretty good"

Paula: "You're identifiable. This unplugged version was very brave. Don't ever let the bad notes speed you up. I thought it must be challenging but for you it didn't seem so."

Simon: "I don't think you had much choice to do other than what you did. It was like ordering a hamburger and only getting a bun without any tomato or onion."

Kristy Lee Cook

As if the dull vocal isn't enough, they throw an arpeggio in there too. Enough with the

Randy: "I gotta tell you, I didn't think it was amazing but you've definitely started stepping up at the end."

Paula: "You're a very smart girl because you have it all planned out. I'm like, blown away. I loved how the arrangement was done. You'd have a country hit with it. It shows Mariah a legacy that she leaves for the younger generation."

Simon: "You probably weren't jumping for joy when you found out it was Mariah week. You didn't give me chills. It was a bit whiney at times. It just wasn't great."

David Cook

Original: Mariah Carey - Daydream - Always Be My Baby Always Be My Baby
Pre-Order David's version hereicon

At least someone stepped it up this week. I've been critical of David Cook in the past about being too unrecognisable and unoriginal. Tonight, he proved me wrong and I'm very happy about it!

Randy: "I think more than anyone on the show right now you're ready to make an album. I thought that was the most brilliant performance yet."

Paula: "That song could be in a movie soundtrack right now. You're it."

Simon: "It was like something coming out of karaoke hell into a breath of fresh air. That was original, daring, stood out by a mile and this is the sign of a great potential artist."

Jason Castro

This was a bit of a step backward from last week but like David, he's put a different spin on a very recognizable song.

Randy: "For me, I didn't really love it. I thought I was at a weird beach luau."

Paula: "I'd love to be at that luau, all night long. It's lovely to hear you."

Simon: "I am going to agree with Paula. I thought that wasn't the best vocal, but it was identified with you, a cool version. The guys completely won the night."

Simon thought it was the guys night. Does that mean the bottom three will all be girls?

Tonight's bottom three for me would have to be all girls Carly Smithson, Kristy Lee Cook and Brooke White.

I guess we'll see what happens with the results tomorrow night. Till then...

I just happened across this blog, and I have to say, it felt good to find someone who isn't 100% star-struck and isn't afraid to state a less-than-favorable opinion. They all have talent, but for some, the performing skills are a little weak.
And enough with "songs no one knows!"

DAVID ARCHULETA (not verified) Tue, 2008-04-15 21:04

DAVID ARCHULETA YOU'RE THE BEST I LOVE YOU!!!

msneevyg (not verified) Tue, 2008-04-15 19:57

Ouch - that was harsh on Carly. She was by far the best femaie vocalist tonight.

The Critic Tue, 2008-04-15 19:59

That doesn't say much for the others then, does it?

The Critic Tue, 2008-04-15 19:40

sorry about that... forgot to hit save on the last bit. Smiling

there now though

Cook lover 2 (not verified) Tue, 2008-04-15 19:30

I think you're a little harsh on some people like Carly, but very good commentary otherwise.

(This isn't a big deal by the way, but grammatical mistake bug me. Your post has a few errors, and also some of your commentary didn't fully show up-- there were some incomplete sentences. But you're probably already fixing those!)

Dumbo above had his own mistakes.
