The Top 4 take on Classic Rock And Roll

Submitted by The Critic on Tue, 2008-05-06 18:08.

Can you believe there are only 4 contestants left? Not far to the Grand Finale now!

Tonight the Top 4 are performing classics from the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame.

Can Syesha pull out another miracle performance to save herself from elimination again? Can David Archuleta keep the tempo up again this week? Can Jason Castro earn a spot in the Top 3? Will David Cook blitz everyone again?

If you haven't already, why not join one of our Office Pools on the right and see if you can pick who is going and who is staying.

Also, If you need the voting numbers, they can be found here.

Here is tonight's recap:

David Cook

David Cook
Original: Duran Duran - Rio - Hungry Like the Wolf Hungry Like The Wolf
Buy all off David's performances from iTunes hereicon
1-866-43657-01 OR 1-866-43657-05

What a terrible vocal performance that was. Yuck, yuck, yuck, yuck, YUCK! I hope his next performance is better than that!

Randy: "I'm interested to see which songs you guys choose. It was an ok choice and an ok performance but it wasn't amazing."
Paula: "You've left me with a big appetite. It makes me realize why I tolerate being the only girl in the boys club."
Simon: "It was good and I kind of agree with Randy that it was copycat. Do I think it was good enough to make it through to next week? Yes."

Ssyesha Mercado

Syesha Mercado
Original: Tina Turner - Tina Turner: The Collected Recordings - Proud Mary Proud Mary
Buy all off Syesha's performances from iTunes hereicon
1-866-43657-02 OR 1-866-43657-06

I'm a little over Syesha's predictability. She seems to be cruising through American Idol by not taking any risks.

Randy: "I'm laughing because this is the third week in a row that Syesha has showed up and is in the zone. Very nice."
Paula: "You look like a star. You have started this competition as a big girl with a big voice and when you feel it, magic happens."
Simon: "I'm sorry to put a slight damper on this but I thought it was a bad, shrieky version. It was a bad impression of Tina Turner."

Jason Castro

Jason Castro
Original: Bob Marley - Legend (Remastered) [Bonus Tracks] - I Shot the Sheriff I Shot the Sheriff
Buy all off Jason's performances from iTunes hereicon
1-866-43657-03 OR 1-866-43657-07

Good Lord, are we back to the auditions tonight? Round one sucks this week!

Randy: "Man, dude. OK, look for me that was a really karaoke Bob Marley. There was nothing special about it. It's not about just having fun. I didn't get it."
Paula: "I never saw you perform this much to the audience. I wasn't crazy about the song or performance but your true artistry shines through."
Simon: "Stand back... That was utterly atrocious. This was like honestly a first round audition massacre. I don't know what you're thinking."

David Archuleta

David Archuleta
Original: Ben E. King - The Very Best of Ben E. King - Stand by Me Stand By Me
Buy all off David's performances from iTunes hereicon
1-866-43657-04 OR 1-866-43657-08

If tonight's performances were to result in the winner of American Idol being named, it would unequivocally be David Archuleta

Randy: "I'm happy about the fact that at least one guy always hits the stage ready to win. He brought the hot mad vocals Paula, that was hot!"
Paula: "We forget you're only 17, it's hard. I admire that you're communicating with your eyes. You're taking in everything we're saying. You're seasoned."
Simon: "You could have whistled a song and it would have sounded better than the last song. Very good choice of song, I thought you struggled at the end of it. But in the grand scheme of things I'm gonna call that as the best performance so far."

David Cook

David Cook
Original: The Who - Who's Next - Baba O'Riley Baba O'Riley
Buy all off David's performances from iTunes hereicon
1-866-43657-01 OR 1-866-43657-05

All I can say is "who was the person who sang in David Cook's place during the first song?"

Randy: "Check it out, I mean, I dunno there's something different going on tonight but that's the David Cook I've grown to love. Just be you cause you were great."
Paula: "I want more, more, more, more David Cook. I'm really humbled."
Simon: "Welcome back David Cook."

Ssyesha Mercado

Syesha Mercado
Original: Sam Cooke - 30 Greatest Hits - Sam Cooke Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 - A Change Is Gonna Come Change Is Gonna Come
Buy all off Syesha's performances from iTunes hereicon
1-866-43657-02 OR 1-866-43657-06

Again, a good safe song for Syesha. Perhaps her plan is to play it safe and hope no one else screws up. I'd be worried though, at this point, screwing up makes your fans more intent on voting to keep you. Flying under the radar may ultimately cost her this week.

Randy: "I did not love this one as much. I didn't like the arrangement and I thought you pushed out for things and didn't make it. It felt all disconnected to me and it fell flat."
Paula: "I want you to know how you orchestrated your vocals. It was beautiful. You turned this into a beautiful performance. You have come."
Simon: "Syesha, I have to be fair. I'm going to agree with Paula"

Jason Castro

Jason Castro
Original: Bob Dylan - The Essential Bob Dylan - Mr. Tambourine Man Mr Tambourine Man
Buy all off Jason's performances from iTunes hereicon
1-866-43657-03 OR 1-866-43657-07

How can anyone in the Top 4 forget their lyrics? As if the pressure isn't already enough, he's blown it. It'll be a real miracle if he's here next week.

Randy: "You're not in the zone tonight"
Paula: "It is what it is. Obviously it didn't blow us away but you blow me away."
Simon: "Jason, I'd pack your suitcase."

David Archuleta

David Archuleta
Original: Elvis Presley - Elvis 30 #1 Hits - Love Me Tender Love Me Tender
Buy all off David's performances from iTunes hereicon
1-866-43657-04 OR 1-866-43657-08

Outstanding night from David A. Untouchable!

Randy: "Dude you got it going on right now the hot vocals of the night!"
Paula: "I felt your heart it was fantastic and beautiful."
Simon: "You didn't beat the competition tonight, you crushed the competition tonight"

As far as the bottom two is concerned, it has to be Jason and Syesha. Has to be.

See you tomorrow for the elimination.

David Cook was amazing in the final and he stayed cool and calm but he knew his confidence is there to win the American idol because his talent (voice) ,and also how he entertained the audience was great. that is why he won. David Cook is a great singer and he will be success just like Carry Underwood. Congratulation! David Cook, you were my favorite from the beginning of the season until the final.

Horace (not verified) Fri, 2008-05-09 14:54

tut-tut @ fedup - a poor misguided individual

There are some vocalists who DO sound the same across their repertoire - these are commonly known as poor singers. On the flipside there are other vocalists who (despite having a vocal style) achieve a truly varied range in their vocals and tone through the spectrum of their performances - these are better known as talented singers.

It's a simple truth - and that, I believe, is the root of people's criticism directed toward David Inarticuleta. He merely sings each song as it was written. Devoid of any real creativity.

Horace (not verified) Fri, 2008-05-09 14:40

If Archuleta wins, he would have nothing worthwhile to say, as always. A more appropriate name for him would be DAVID INARTICULETA as he simply struggles to string more than two (meaningful) words together. But then again, if he wins it would be a travesty anyway - he has zero standout quality and regularly fades into complete insignificance. There's only one serious contender for this crown - David Cook.

ARCHULETTA IS GAY (not verified) Thu, 2008-05-08 14:32

DAVID COOK RULES. DAVID ARCHULETA IS WAY TOO PREDICTABLE. EVERY TIME ITS A SLOW SONG. AND WHATS WITH THE GAY SMILE AND LAUGH HE GIVES AFTER EVERY PERFORMANCE?

idolfatigued (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 20:15

Is anyone else out there getting really tired of American Idol? I've watched less this season than in seasons past. None of the remaining singers excite me to the point of actually anticipating an album. The amount of commercials is absolutely absurd. Last nite's performance show had a commercial break after every single performance. The contestants could have sang 3 songs each had it not been for that. The results shows are entirely too long as well. I mean, come on....final four & an hour to announce the eliminated idol? No wonder ratings are down!! I didn't tune in until the last 5 mins & got all the info I needed.

Just wondering aloud.....

Jim Robinson (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 18:03

The sound was so bad in last nights show that it really worked against anyone that was actually rocking.

I have never heard such a bad mix. The instruments were so in the background that the rock tunes sounded lame.

Someone should get fired over this.

-Kat- Wed, 2008-05-07 17:25

Fedup if its just people opinions why are YOU the one getting so beligerent and angry?

pamela (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 15:16

come to think of it, it was a rock n roll night and david cook didn't even pull it off. hehehe what a shame.

ashley snodgrass (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 22:57

I belive both Davids will be in the bottom two and that all the idol preformers did great but jason sucked lastnight.

pamela (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 15:08

you go fedup. i will vote for you. that is exactly what i want to say. thank you.

janice evans (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 12:02

I think we should all give credit to Syesha. As far as predictability is concerned, I do predict her to hit her notes, to be artistic and to look good doing it. She does the job, whatelse can you expect. David Cook is ok, but he is not an idol. David Archuletta sings and riffs like the best of them, but that is in every song. He sand on stage like a muppet and has no entertaining skills. The other David screams and is nothing to look at. Castro is not even in the picture. She's made it this far give her credit.

Not so much of an Idol fan now (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 09:06

This year is the most I've watch American Idol....every year I watch bits here and there but this year, I'm watching it week after week. I have to say, I'm getting sick of the show and I don't care to watch it much anymore. It's to the point I wonder how much of this show is rigged. The judges and their comments are absurd....they say things so that votes are swung a certain way (hint hint, David A.) I don't understand why Paula is even on there. She's so worried about not being the "bad guy" that she says the same thing over and over..."oh I think you're great, I love your style, there's something about you....etc" Get new lines please!!

David Cook -awesome singer, takes chances....yes he had an off night but no one is perfect.

Syesha - Yes she is a great singer, but doesn't take many chances....it does get to be predictable

Jason - I'm a Jason fan but I do admit last night was off. HOWEVER, in his defence, he doesn't know whether to change a song or keep it the same. If he changes it, they don't like it....if it's the same, they say he needs to find his style. After Hallelujah, they critisized him over and over....the judges need to make up their mind of what they want!!! No wonder he's confused....

David Archuleta - where do I start?? For one thing, he looked like a slob last night!! Stop slouching!! He doesn't know how to act on stage, all he does is smile to win votes. And can we talk about predictable.....week after week slow song after another....and didn't he sing "Stand by Me" last week? Oh no that's right, he didn't...sorry I get confused BECAUSE THEY ALL SOUND THE SAME!! Talk about NOT taking chances....he sings them without changing the song.....and yet the judges don't say anything....why?? Because they want the votes swung David A.'s way....how is that fair to critisize the other contestants who "don't take a chance" when David sings them straight from the radio! David, I agree with a previous post....the Mickey Mouse Club is waiting for you....

Honestly, the show can do without the judges. All they do is help the public decide who they "SHOULD" (if you can call it that) vote for instead of who the publc WANTS.....

One more thing....last weeks incident with Paula was inexcusable. Maybe it was true that she read David Cook's notes from the rehersal (I think that was an excuse, but whatever). HOWEVER, she still should have know that they sang once. There is no excuse not to know. I think it was pretty sad that Ryan had to make up an excuse and say "they were thrown a curveball and we love Paula". No American Idol, she messed up, face it. She should have to apolgize for not doing her job the way she should. Once again, I make my point....get rid of the judges.....actually, just get rid of the show, it's getting old....

*phew* I'm done....just needed to put my opinion in....

dona (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 15:20

My daughter auditioned for american idol in Miami and she will never again. She says the show is fixed and it is all a fraud.

FedUp (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 14:53

Man...I am SO tired of the "David A sounds the same every week" comments. Are you people listening to Cook at all? You're trying to tell me that he sounds different than the week before? What a bunch of tone def idiots you all are. They ALL sound the same week after week...it's called VOCAL STYLE morons. Neil Diamond sounds like Neil Diamond song after song...day after day. What a rediculous commentary to make.

Also, you are giving Cook the same "he had an off night" break you are complaining the judges are giving other contestants...it's called OPINION fool. The runs that Archuleta puts into his song is a R&B style...not all music is sung with a low, moaning, "I've got to take a mad dump" voice like Cook's. Someone PLEASE give that dude and ex-lax so that he can release those inner demons.

BlakeVa (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 13:28

Having the judges is the best part. If they weren't there it would just be singing, applauding and then the next song....boring. The judges allow there to be instant feedback (unless you want the audience to boo every bad performance)....

Kitty232 (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 08:26

David Cook: Will be successful no matter what. Will finish first or second. He looks like a rock star. The only reason he is doing AI is because no record label idiots have discovered him yes.
David A. Good vocals, especially for his age. Between the mom and teenage vote, will finish first or second. Anyone who gives him grief should try out for AI...so we can rip you to shreds.
Syesha: Eh. I am sick of the soul. Try something different. Even the resident rocker switched it up. All she does is try on clothes from the wardrobe room, look pretty, and belt out songs that are NOT shocking...nor particularly original. If you handed her a rock song, it would be like Jordin Sparks last year - unable to compete.
Jason: His personality is what is keeping him in here. He's cute. He has a guitar. He was on TV. I think the sympathy vote may work this week.
Besides, the runner-up usually does better. Anyone know what happened to Ruben? Taylor Hicks? Fantasia is on stage. I would rather be runner up. You still get the car.

dona (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 15:27

I am a Jason fan, I am 52 years old. The reason why I like him is because he is different and very emotional and genuine. Randy and Simon hates Jason. it doesn't matter what Jason sings they all think it's bad, I am jamaican and his version of Bob Marley's song was far from being atrocious, it was very well done and he had the most fun out of a song.He has been put down every week, it is bad you are all bad, no wonder he slipped up. The same for Syesha. Simon insults her week after week, no wonder she cried, it's not the song she was crying about but it is all the effort to be put down week after week. Jason takes everything like a gentleman and true star..I will buy his cds and maybe he will make most money than any of them. If Randy said every week Jason you are a bomb baby, then everyone else would say so.The judges do influence the voters and I am sorry but I so dislike Randy. He thinks David A should win but he is so boring and made a mockery out of Elvis Presleys song last night.

mmmmyeah (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 17:54

Hello Dona, I am not 52 years old but I like Bob Marley. Now that we got the useless information out of the way…

It's not a matter of hating Jason no matter what he sings, it's just that he does not sing that well. His Pitch is questionable, his range is 1 dimensional and his delivery is flat. He did Hallelujah very well but that's only because the song is a perfect fit for him, it's more like spoken poetry than an actual song and he is very good at that. The second Bob Marley tune he did he sounded very good, then he forgot the words (understandable after the harsh words from the judges), but still nothing stellar.

Syesha - I agree. Pitch is grade A, Range? Please, she would mop the floor with all of them other than Carly in that department. Like I said before she is a tripple threat. Sing, Dance and act. She's got it all.

If Randy said Jason was the 'bomb' every week I would assume Paula abdul was passing to her right. (if that flew over your head we are done talking).

I also am left wondering at some of the judges decisions.

Ian in Hollywood (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 16:44

I found your comment interesting. It was Randy that made Sayesha cry,not Simon. Weeks ago on The Larry King Show, both Simon and Randy said the final would be the two Davids.
I have a bit of a music background and some of the judges comments do surprise me at times. I knew that Carly couldn't win because they had it in for her, they just didn't like her. A failed MCA artist and why was she even there?

Still, I like the show, though I don't believe the 45 million votes for one second. As for Jason, he is a bit thick and a true example why the govrnment is right in making cannabis a Class B drug again.

bodatious (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 07:29

Hey -Kat , You sure got it right about Syesha, she is really coming on ! Boy, her voice, looks and class has improved every week. I thought her performances were very good as well as being unpredictable. She has been this years sleeper and will finish second !

Leah Gutstein (not verified) Tue, 2008-05-06 22:30

how come David Cook seemed to be the only one singing Rock and Roll on ROCK AND ROLL WEEK?????

whatever...as long as Jason goes, I'm happy.

cindylouhoo (not verified) Tue, 2008-05-06 22:05

What??? David Archuleta showed the MOST emotion and had the best stage presence and personality... and he is a humble 17 year old. His vocals are AMAZING!!! David Cook rocked the 2nd song BUT, what was wrong with him?? He was the one with no personality tonight. He was like a statue, like he is tired of the competition or somthing. THe only one who looked like he was working hard was Archuleta.

h8tchletta (not verified) Tue, 2008-05-06 22:44

I am so over Archuletta. Seriously, Mickey Mouse club has his ears waiting for him.

FedUp (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 15:02

You are an idiot if you think only 10-12 year olds are voting for Archuleta. He has an appeal across generations many artists wish they had.

I have finally come to realize that what all you haters really dislike is that all of this adoration towards Archuleta comes to him without him even trying. He flat out appeals to the masses and Cook has to dress, act, be the "rocker"...at times it seems like he's trying too hard to hide the real geek inside. POSER!

Frank S (not verified) Tue, 2008-05-06 21:57

Was I the only one with Audio problems, was it a local thing or did everyone have a hard time hearing the band? Here in Arizona (on HD and Standard TV) it sounded like everyone was singing A Capella.

Ian in Hollywood (not verified) Wed, 2008-05-07 16:52

Good call Frank, you noticed it too.
It proves that all that fancy equipment, those huge boards with all the sliders are just all for show. Makes the "engineer" look cool. It was bad audio, these people are full of it. What ever happened to professional pride in audio engineering.
The place is just down the road, I should go there after work and ask for the engineers job.

CozmoKhan (not verified) Tue, 2008-05-06 20:00

David Archuleta is by far and away the most over-rated, over-hyped, flat vocalist that this competition has ever seen this far into the show. He doesn't have any stage presence, any range, or any personality.

From the start of the season all of the people I've talked to about this group loved Lizard Boy. But, as the season progressed, they've all converted to the bright side and realized that he cannot and should not win.

We all know that Paula must be drunk for each performance, but Randy has to be on high quality drugs to be raving about a horribly flat performance each and every week.

OU812 (not verified) Tue, 2008-05-06 19:08

- CASTRO NEEDS TO GO - How the girl - ooops boy made it this far is a testiment to how many slackers are in this country.

- Everyone else is a toss up.

-Kat- Tue, 2008-05-06 19:03

I dont think Syesha is predictable....anymore. The last couple of weeks have been anything but. I think she is finally stepping it up a bit. Is it enough to make her the next American Idol? Doubtful but I think she will make it another week.

Archuleta is who I think is getting pretty predictable. There isn't any passion or energy when he performs. He can sing but I could feel as much excitement from him listening on the radio not seeing anything he does.

David Cook- that last song saved him. After the first one I thought this is not the time to be performing like that. That could cost ya. But he hit it the second one.

Jason- for a kid who had no previous public singing expreince he has come a long way. But not far enough. He just doesn't do it for me. In my opininon, he's the weakest link and should go home.
