The Voice chipping away at Idol's younger audience

Rival talent show The Voice appears to be carving a large slice out of the number of kids who watch American Idol.

While Idol has for years been the unrivalled ratings champ in the teenage market, its share has dropped dramatically since the addition to The Voice to the mix.

This year alone, the show has lost more than 30 per cent of its teenage and 20s audience, with The Voice collecting many of those viewers thanks to its younger, edgier image.

After saving Idol frontrunner Jessica Sanchez from elimination last week, the American Idol judges are now calling the competition as anyone’s game.

Viewers voted to eliminate Sanchez despite the fact the three judges believe she is one of the strongest competitors on the show.

Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler voted to use their judges save to stop Sanchez from heading home early.

Despite TMZ's latest tip off being that one of the favorites is going home tonight, let's take a look at how the polls are stacking up.

The vote from last night was all pretty consistent across the board with total votes ranging from 10% to 22%.  Your Top 3 from last night were Jessica Sanchez (22%), Phillip Phillips (17%) and Hollie Cavanagh (15%). The Bottom three were Colton Dixon (13%) while Elise Testone and Skylar Laine each had 10% of the vote.  Joshua Ledet was firmly in the middle of the pack.

As far as who you wanted to go home tonight, 33% of you wanted Hollie Cavanagh to be shown the door.  Interestingly enough, from the comments after the show last night, the majority appeared to be desperate pleas from her fans for everyone to vote and keep her in the competition.

TMZ have just sent out the following release:

There will be a stunning turn of events on "American Idol" tonight, because TMZ has learned one of the absolute favorites to win the competition will be eliminated.

Sources connected with the show tell TMZ ... producers are scrambling to persuade the judges to use their "save" on the contestant.

We're told producers actually thought 2 of the 3 contestants in the bottom tonight were strong candidates to win the entire competition.

And we're told the person who is booted tonight is the one producers thought was the strongest on the show, and they are as stunned over the vote as they were when Jennifer Hudson was kicked off the show.
