Who really is the worst?

Submitted by The Critic on Wed, 2006-03-08 20:25

After last week's elimination, both of Vote For The Worst's candidates, David Radford and Brenna Gethers, were sent packing. This week however, Kellie Pickler and Kevin Covais have come out as their replacements so the question must be asked, who are the goofballs making these decisions?

Sure, Kellie is not the sharpest tool in the shed but come on, the worst singer/performer? I would have expected either Kinnik Sky or Melissa McGhee to earn that title for the women. And as for Chicken Little, Kevin Covais. If VoteForTheWorst were around during season two, I'm sure they would have been rooting for Clay Aiken.

It seems to me that VoteForTheWorst have lost the plot this season. Last year it was a good joke considering what happened with Scott Savol but this year they are just plain silly. Claiming they influence the vote and then have their candidates eliminated in the first rounds is rather laughable.

The other option is that they think everyone else left really are great this year and just drew straws.

What do you think?

The American Idol girls performed last night for our votes and now tonight, the final 8 remaining boys will perform in the hopes that they can secure a place in the top 12

Last week, Jose and David left us and this week's departing contestants will be disappointed that they made is so close and yet so far.

First up tonight is:

<!-- FASTCLICK.COM 300x250 Medium Rectangle CODE for idolblog.com --> <!-- FASTCLICK.COM 300x250 Medium Rectangle CODE for idolblog.com -->

Gedeon McKinney
Song choice: When A Man Love A Woman Michael Bolton - Love Songs - When a Man Loves a Woman
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5701
TXT Vote to 5701
My Thoughts: There is something about Gedeon's smile that I find un-nerving. He's just to cabaret for American Idol I think.
Randy: It was alright. It started ok for me. You're a real old soul in this competition. Nice way to start the show.
Paula: You're unique in this competition. You're a real showman and you're needed in this competition.
Simon: You are kinda odd aren't you. I thought it was ok. A bit cabaret but you're growing on me.

Chris Daughtry
Song choice: Broken Robert Downey Jr. - Broken / Man Like Me - Single - Broken
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5702
TXT Vote to 5702
My Thoughts: I got so sick of hearing this song on the radio so it's nice to hear it a little different. I love Chris' voice and his arrangement of the song is really sweet. A little sharp in a couple of places but very nice.
Randy: You know I'm a fan. I love people who know who you are. You're ready. Another good performance.
Paula: What ever happens in the competition I'm sure you'll be selling out stadiums. I can already hear you on the radio.
Simon: I wasn't so impressed. I thought it was a bit indulgant. You need to be as broad as possible and I thought it was boring. You still need to entertain.

Kevin Covais
Song choice: Vincent (Starry, Starry Night) Josh Groban - Josh Groban - Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5703
TXT Vote to 5703
My Thoughts: I think Kevin has played to his audience very well with this song.
Randy: It was an interesting song choice for me. Whatever the song though, you can sing.
Paula: I have nothing but love for you. You command attention when you sing. Ballads are great for you.
Simon: In the same was as you like watching puppies play, people will enjoy it. I think the granny vote is yours again tonight. I thought it was juvenille.

Bucky Covington
Song choice: Wave on Wave Pat Green - Wave On Wave - Wave On Wave
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5704
TXT Vote to 5704
My Thoughts: Oops. I switched off. I guess that means that was boring.
Randy: What I like about the boys is that you know who you are. I liked it.
Paula: You're unpretentious. I like the raw, untapped talent of you.
Simon: It was ok. It wasn't exception and I don't think ok is good enough.

Will Makar
Song choice: How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) James Taylor - James Taylor (Best Live) - How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5705
TXT Vote to 5705
My Thoughts: I think Will's performance is far more juvenille that what Simon thought of Kevin's performance. He looks and sounds like he's singing at some high school talent show.
Randy: That was not good for me. It was like a bad karaoke version.
Paula: I totally disagree. Forget 11 year olds. I'm a fan. I think you raised your game.
Simon: Paula you must have been starved of entertainment as a child. I have to agree Randy. At least you're getting the middle aged vote.

Taylor Hicks
Song choice: Takin' It to the Streets The Doobie Brothers - Takin' It to the Streets - Takin' It to the Streets
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5706
TXT Vote to 5706
My Thoughts: Taylor is just a fantastic performer. We have never had anything like him on American Idol. His quirky dance moves are just so crazy that you're eyes can never leave the screen.
Randy: The score goes like this. Great song choice. Good job singing it. But the dancing! What was that!?
Paula: I'm taking those steps and incorporating them in my next performance. That was my favourite performance of yours.
Simon: You could single handedly kill the music video industry. That was definitely a radio performance. Best performance of the night.

Elliott Yamin
Song choice: Heaven The Doobie Brothers - Takin' It to the Streets - Takin' It to the Streets
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5707
TXT Vote to 5707
My Thoughts: Elliott can sing, there's no doubt about that but I was a little bored with this performance. I'd quite like to see him do something up tempo.
Randy: I really look forward to hearing you sing every week. You've got it. With hearing in only one ear and you can still sing in tune? We got a hot one tonight!
Paula: You are absolutely amazing. I'm beside myself.
Simon: I thought it was a cop out for you. It was the first time I felt a disconnect. I wasn't crazy about it. Tonight wasn't the best for me.

Ace Young
Song choice: Butterflies The Doobie Brothers - Takin' It to the Streets - Takin' It to the Streets
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5708
TXT Vote to 5708
My Thoughts: I'm not liking this at all. The falsetto is painful. It's gotten a bit better towards the end of the song but I don't think this is Ace's best performance by any stretch of the imagination.
Randy: You've got a great falsetto. It was hot.
Paula: That was better than the original.
Simon: I think you made that work but I think there were parts that didn't.

American Idol Episode 17 - Top 8 Girls Perform - Review

Submitted by The Critic on Tue, 2006-03-07 18:58

American Idol is back again for its final week of eliminations before we find out who our top 12 will be. Last week Brenna Gethers and Heather Cox got the chop and this week everyone knows that this is the last chance they get to impress. It would absolutely suck to come this close to the Top 12 only be voted out. Oh well.. it's going to happen to some one. Who that is though is entirely up to you.

First up tonight is:

<!-- BEGIN: AdSolution-Website-Tag 4.3 : american.idolblog.com / 300x250 --> <!-- END:AdSolution-Tag 4.3 -->

Paris Bennett
Song choice: Conga Gloria Estefan - Gloria Estefan: Greatest Hits - Conga
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5701
TXT Vote to 5701
My Thoughts: This wouldn't be my first choice in song for Paris. It was ok but not outstanding like she has been other weeks
Randy: I'm always curious to see what you're gonna sing but that wasn't my favourite. I hope to see you do a good ballad net week.
Paula:
I enjoy you doing upbeat stuff. You're very talented but it's a very difficult song to sing.
Simon: Vocally it was ok but people love you so we'll see you next week.

Lisa Tucker
Song choice: Where I Stand Máire Brennan - Whisper To the Wild Water - Where I Stand
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5702
TXT Vote to 5702
My Thoughts: I would love to see Lisa perform something that is a bit more upbeat that she can have some fun with. She's good, but she's getting a little boring.
Randy: I liked the song but it was still a little too old for me. It didn't come off great great for me.
Paula:
I look at you and see a seasoned performer. I wish you could have sung something we could have all gotten into.
Simon: We think you're super talented but it sounds like you're singing songs that your mother has picked for you.

Melissa McGhee
Song choice: What About Love Heart - Love Songs - What About Love
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5703
TXT Vote to 5703
My Thoughts: I absolutely love this song and it's a great song for Melissa. Her husky voice is great.
Randy: That song choice was really good for you. Very nice.
Paula:
I think you're improving every week. You're a powerhouse.
Simon: I totally disagree. I think that last note booked your plane ticket home. It sounded like you were yelling the whole song.

Kinnik Sky
Song choice: If I Ain't Got You Alicia Keys - If I Ain't Got You - Single - If I Ain't Got You
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5704
TXT Vote to 5704
My Thoughts: Ok. I'm bored straight away with this. Kinnik is sharp and is messing up a great song. Cya Kinnik. I hope you've had fun.
Randy: I love the song. Started out amazing. Got a little sharp and I don't think you nailed it.
Paula:
It's the best you've looked but you were off with your pitch and it's the first time.
Simon: You just messed it up. You started off ok but it went all over the place in the middle.

Katharine McPhee
Song choice: Think James Brown & The Famous Flames - Think! - Think
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5705
TXT Vote to 5705
My Thoughts: It's nice to see Katharine doing something upbeat. It's going to be great to watch Katharine grow during the top 12 because she's already great.
Randy: We got a hot one here tonight.
Paula:
It's nice to see you cut loose tonight. Excellent stuff.
Simon: That was a risk but you pulled it off effortlessly. You're going to sail through.

Ayla Brown
Song choice: Unwritten Natasha Bedingfield - Unwritten - Unwritten
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5706
TXT Vote to 5706
My Thoughts: I'm not enjoying Ayla's take on Natasha Bedingfield's song. She is just too wooden.
Randy: I'm a big fan of yours but the song was ok. You need to pick a song that is a singers song.
Paula:
You're out there giving your all working your butt off. It's good to hear a contemporary song from a current artist.
Simon: I love you in your film clips. I would love that young person we see in the clips on the stage. It was good but it just wasn't fantastic.

Mandisa Hundley
Song choice: I'm Every Woman Whitney Houston - The Bodyguard - I'm Every Woman
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5707
TXT Vote to 5707
My Thoughts: Wow! Mandisa is hot tonight. I'm loving her more and more. That was fantastic.
Randy: This to me is the best vocal by a female performer so far this season. Girls, that is the benchmark right there.
Paula:
That's what we're talking about. The arrangement was awesome. You gave me chills.
Simon: Everyone of these girls hate your guts tonight because you made everyone before you look ordinary. It's the only one I would rewind on my tivo.

Kellie Pickler
Song choice: I'm The Only One Melissa Etheridge - Yes I Am - I'm the Only One
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5708
TXT Vote to 5708
My Thoughts: Kellie is really starting to grow on me. Last week was fantastic and this week she's chosen another great song and is performing better and better each week.
Randy: Every week now you've been really consistent. You did a good job.
Paula:
You got your groove on. Guys are in love with you. You're adorable.
Simon: Kellie, you're known as a naughty little minx. I really like you. I don't think you're the best singer but I think I prefer you to last year's winner.

My top 3 this week were Kellie Pickler, Mandisa Hundley and Katharine McPhee

I think that going home this week will be Kinnik Sky and Ayla Brown

American Idol Episode 15 - Top 10 Boys Perform - Review

<!-- FASTCLICK.COM 300x250 Medium Rectangle CODE for idolblog.com --> <!-- FASTCLICK.COM 300x250 Medium Rectangle CODE for idolblog.com -->

The American Idol girls have had their turn to impress and now tonight, the final 10 remaining boys will perform in the hopes that they can win your vote.

Last week, Bobby and Patrick departed from the show serving a stern warning to the remaining contestants that if they don't perform well, American will not keep them in the show.

Stay tuned for the American Idol action as it happens:

First up tonight is:

Taylor Hicks
Song choice: Easy Easy
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5701
TXT Vote to 5701
My Thoughts: Taylor is so great for American Idol because he just doesn't fit the generic Idol mould. He's a fantastic performer.
Randy: It wasn't my favourite performance but I love you.
Paula: I love what you're wearing tonight. I love your enthusiasm. It wasn't my favourite song choice but you're one of my favourites.
Simon: You need to take yourself out of the bubble of American Idol because that wasn't a great song choice for me and if you watched that back you'd think it was average.

Elliott Yamin
Song choice: Moody's Mood for Love Moody's Mood for Love
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5702
TXT Vote to 5702
My Thoughts: Elliott has definitely got the chops for American Idol and this is a great song choice for him. He is totally unexpected for me because he looks like he's just stepped out of an Amish village. Definitely growing on me.
Randy: Every time we have seen you I have enjoyed you. You have an amazing gift and for the first time this season I have to stand up.
Paula: That is one of the most difficult songs to sing but you did Stevie Wonder proud. I don't know what you can do to top that but I can't wait.
Simon: I think you've grown in confidence. I think I've seen a different you and you're starting to believe in yourself. It was a great performance.

Ace Young
Song choice: If You're Not The One If You're Not the One
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5703
TXT Vote to 5703
My Thoughts: This is a reasonably good song choice for Ace's style but I don't think he's got the chops that Daniel Bedingfield does. He looks strained as he goes for the high note and I think the song is just a bit too big for him.
Randy: I'm glad that you chose that because it showed your range. I think you sing better than you let on. Keep picking harder songs.
Paula: I really think this is another good week for you. It was surprising in a great way to hear you hit the high notes.
Simon: I think you struggled with that vocal tonight and I don't think you were able to sing that song very well.

Gedeon McKinney
Song choice: A Change Is Going To Come A Change Is Going to Come
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5704
TXT Vote to 5704
My Thoughts: I'm a little bored by Gedeon's performance tonight. He can sing but it seems a little contrived.
Randy: You know what I love about you, you're real natural. You ended it amazing after some pitch problems at the start. I think you did a good job.
Paula: You are a performer that we'll see for decades.
Simon: You are a funny little thing. I just didn't know what to make of you with your smile and faces you make while you sing. You do that old style of music very well. You sounded authentic.

Kevin Covais
Song choice: I Heard It Through the Grapevine I Heard It Through the Grapevine
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5705
TXT Vote to 5705
My Thoughts: It's nice to see Kevin having a bit of fun on stage. I don't think this is his best performance as it's not entirely his style but it is still pretty good.
Randy: I really thoroughly enjoyed you. Good job. Good job.
Paula: You are infectious. I think you're the next sex symbol. I love watching your parents too.
Simon: This really is la la land isn't it. I do like you but the reality is that if I heard that on the radio I would turn that off.

Jose "Sway" Penala
Song choice: Overjoyed Overjoyed
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5706
TXT Vote to 5706
My Thoughts: I'm finding this boring. Not the best vocal performance tonight either.
Randy: That wasn't as good as last week for me. To do something from Stevie you have to make it unbelievable and you didn't.
Paula: I feel like you're a little disconnected tonight and you weren't in that zone.
Simon: This is exactly how not to do well on a show like this. That was nothing more than pure karaoke.

Will Makar
Song choice: Lady Lady
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5707
TXT Vote to 5707
My Thoughts: Will has a beautiful voice and will no doubt be swooning many girls during his performance but I think that it will be forgotten by the end of the show.
Randy: I think at this point in the show you need to do something that blows us away and I wasn't.
Paula: I think it was too safe and a little bland.
Simon: It was like an audition for Cats. Eleven year old girls will love that.

Bucky Covington
Song choice: Thunder Rolls Thunder Rolls
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5708
TXT Vote to 5708
My Thoughts: Bucky reminds me of Bo Bice this week and quite frankly I think this is average. The vocals aren't that hot but the song suits his style. If he survives this week he'll be hard pressed to stick around the final 12.
Randy: This was a great song choice for you. A couple of pitch problems but you did your thing.
Paula: You hit every note at the beginning and I think you're finding your place in this competition.
Simon: I like you because I think you're a very sincere guy - you are what you are. You come over for me though as the support act for the stars of this show.

David Radford
Song choice: Something About the Way You Look Tonight Something About the Way You Look Tonight
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5709
TXT Vote to 5709
My Thoughts: What is it with all these guys trying to stare down the camera like Ace this week? I'm kinda over the whole crooning thing on American Idol. It's time to move on.
Randy: The good thing for you is that you stayed in your zone but I found myself getting bored. The band sounded great though.
Paula: This is your zone but I feel that we've seen you perform better with other songs.
Simon: You absolutely have the right tone for this style but you need charisma and confidence. It was uncomfortable.

Chris Daughtry
Song choice: Hemorrhage (In My Hands) Hemorrhage (In My Hands)
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5710
TXT Vote to 5710
My Thoughts: Chris is just fantastic tonight. I've been a big fan of his from his first audition. IMO he's so much better than Bo and Constantine were last year.
Randy: I loved it, loved it, loved it. That was the right song choice for you and you could be on the charts right now with that.
Paula: Do you know how good you are? You are amazing. There are magic moments on that stage and you just hit one of many to come.
Simon: There have been many compliments tonight, however, this was the only performance which stands up in the real world. It was the only credible performance that everyone else should be looking up to.

American Idol Episode 14 - Top 10 Girls Perform - Review

Submitted by The Critic on Tue, 2006-02-28 19:06

Now that the first round of American Idol eliminations is over, perhaps we'll see some great performances as the girls take the stage in the hopes of securing a spot in the top 12. Tonight, the final 10 remaining girls will perform in the hopes that they can win your vote and a couple of them really need to step it up if they don't want to be going home on Thursday night.

Ryan tells us that last Thursday was the biggest night for TV in more than a decade with Survivor, The finals of Dancing with the Stars and the Figure Skating showdown at the Winter Olympics up against American Idol with just under 78 Million viewers, American Idol came out on top by 2 to 1.

First up tonight is:

Katharine McPhee
Song choice: All is Fair In Love All in Love Is Fair
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5701
TXT Vote to 5701
My Thoughts: I really like listening to Katharine sing. She is a very controlled and accomplished vocalist. Not a lot of 'performance' but beautifully sung.
Randy: Thought it was a safe choice. Not best performance. Just ok for him.
Paula:
You moved me. You moved America. It wasn't a song choice that connected with me enough.
Simon: This show isn't just about singing. You can't just be in your own world because the American audience will forget that performance 3 or 4 contestants later.

Kinnik Sky
Song choice: Here For the Party Here for the Party
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5702
TXT Vote to 5702
My Thoughts: I'm not liking this at all. She's got a lot of spunk on the stage but I don't think the song really suits her voice.
Randy: I liked the original but I don't think it showcased your vocal ability but at least it showed your personality.
Paula:
At this stage in the competition you really need to be choosing songs that show your range so push yourself and take those risks.
Simon: On the plus side, you took a risk and did a song that will be more memorable than last weeks song choice. On the downside, that's the kind of performance I'd expect coming off a ride at Mountain Mountain.

Lisa Tucker
Song choice: Who's Lovin' You Who's Lovin' You
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5703
TXT Vote to 5703
My Thoughts: With every performance Lisa Tucker gives she proves that she is a professional. Whatever happens in this competition, Lisa Tucker will be having a successful recording career. She is simply superb.
Randy: Didn't show it for me tonight. It was just alright.
Paula:
When you've got it, you've got it. I don't know why you haven't been signed already. Regardless of this show, you're a star.
Simon: The great thing about this is that this is a great showcase for you in front of 30 or 40 million people every week but you don't want to come over as a very young girl singing grown up songs cause I think you're better than that.

Melissa McGhee
Song choice: Why Haven't I Heard from You Why Haven't I Heard from You
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5704
TXT Vote to 5704
My Thoughts: I liked the verse of this song but Melissa has kinda fallen away in the chorus. She's actually really good performing the verses but the chorus just seems empty. I'm guessing she is a smoker by the husk in her voice.
Randy: That song was a great choice for you. It was great to hear that husky voice return. That was hot.
Paula:
That was good to see you come out of your shell. Each week I want to see more and more. You're unique in this competition.
Simon: I love your voice but I thought it was the wrong song. For some reason I don't think you're making a connection with the audience yet. You have to do something with the wow factor because no one is going to remember that song.

Heather Cox
Song choice: Hero Hero
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5705
TXT Vote to
My Thoughts: I just don't find Heather authentic. She can sing but it just comes across as very acted. She's cute but I don't think that is enough to keep around for much longer.
Paula: I think you improved on last week but when you sing songs like that you are going to be compared to icons.
Randy: You look great but when you choose songs by these kind of artists you are going to pale in comparison.
Simon: The problem was it was like one of those ghastly pagents where someone gets up and sings Mariah. It's pointless to get up and sing something when you can't match the great voices.

Brenna Gethers
Song choice: Last Dance Last Dance
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5706
TXT Vote to 5706
My Thoughts: I don't like this performance at all. Brenna is flat in too many places. I didn't like that at all.
Paula: I don't see that magic happening from you.
Randy: You and Simon are quite a bit alike. The attitude and vocals weren't really there.
Simon: I would change the word dance to chance. Everything from the performance, vocal delivery and dancing is what I've seen on holiday at bars. I think that might be the last we see of you.

Paris Bennett
Song choice: Wind Beneath My Wings Wind Beneath My Wings (LP Version)
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5707
TXT Vote to 5707
My Thoughts: Paris' voice sounds so mature. Her range and tone is just fantastic. She is a sheer joy to watch.
Paula: I like your fashion style tonight. You're an amazing performer. I just want to remind you to bring the fun and youth that you have to the competition.
Randy:
You're like a young Lauren Hill. You don't have to play it safe ever. You weren't as scorching as you were last week but you were hot.
Simon: You don't want to look 17 and sound 50.

Ayla Brown
Song choice: I Want You To Need Me I Want You to Need Me
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5708
TXT Vote to 5708
My Thoughts: I'm not really enjoying this as much as I was looking forward to it. Ayla has a lot of work to do to reach the bar that Lisa, Paris and Katharine have set.
Randy: You picked a very good song for you and it actually came off as a nice package. I liked it.
Paula:
I think you want this really bad. It's another week that you've pleasantly surprized me. You picked the right song and you were even better than you were last week.
Simon: You strike me as the kinda girl who always gets A's. You are working harder than anyone on this. The problem I have is that you sometimes want rawness but you always strive for perfection so it's a little bit mechanical for me.

Kellie Pickler
Song choice: Something to Talk About Something to Talk About
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5709
TXT Vote to 5709
My Thoughts: This is a great song choice for Kellie. The twang in her voice is great and I'd actually go as far as saying this is her best performance on the show so far.

Paula:
Can you get any cuter? You're adorable. You picked a great song and you made us smile and dance. Keep on going.
Randy: We got a hot one tonight Dawg Pound. You did your thing. You had a good time doing your thing. I liked it a lot.
Simon: I don't know what it is but you cannot help but like you. You're cute and likeable and if they haven't already, America is going to fall in love with you.

Mandisa Hundley
Song choice: Cry Cry
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5710
TXT Vote to 5710
My Thoughts: This is the Mandisa I was expecting last week. She suits this song much better this week and rounds out the show nicely with her big performance.
Paula: You are one of a kind and you are needed in this competition. You have a great vocal range. You're wowing us.
Randy:
The verse was a little rough for me but when you get to the center of your tone it was good. I wasn't so sure on that song on you. I want to hear it all from you but I didn't hear it all tonight.
Simon: I think America will keep you around for a while. I much preferred the way you looked last week though. You look too cabaret this week. I agree with Randy that you haven't bought it yet but when you're on it I think you're the best female vocalist in this competition.

American Idol Episode 13 - Top 24 Live Elimination - Review

Submitted by The Critic on Thu, 2006-02-23 18:50

Tuesday night the girls performed. Last night, the boys performed. Tonight. Four will go home. Who will it be?

According to our polls, the bottom three girls are Stevie Scott, Heather Cox and Brenna Gethers and David Radford (0%), Gedeon McKinney (7%) and Bobby Bennett (7%) from the guys.

Bobby Bennett (40%) and Jose "Sway" Penala (13%) are the two guys that people want to see go home the most and Brenna Gethers (35%) and Stevie Scott (24%) from the girls.

I'm picking it will be Brenna Gethers and Kinnik Sky from the girls and Bobby Bennett and Gedeon McKinney from the guys.

The Top 24 perform Take It Easy Take It Easy and then it's time to see who is going home. Ryan asks the back row of the girls to stand. Mandisa Hundley, Kellie Pickler, Paris Bennett, Ayla Brown, Lisa Tucker and Katharine McPhee are all safe.

Ryan singles out Heather Cox, Stevie Scott and Melissa McGhee and tells them that they don't have the lowest number of votes. He then gets Becky O'Donohue, Brenna Gethers and Kinnik Sky to stand in the centre of the stage. One of them has the lowest number of votes. Kinnik Sky is safe. As is Brenna Gethers which means Becky O'Donohue is going home.

The same rule applies to the guys as Ryan tells the back row, Gedeon McKinney, David Radford, Taylor Hicks, Will Makar, Bucky Covington and Patrick Hall, that they are all safe.

Ace Young and Elliott Yamin are both safe as well. Kevin Covais and Chris Daughtry are safe as well. Jose "Sway" Penala and Bobby Bennett are left to go through the torture of finding out who has the lowest vote but Bobby Bennett knows it is him.

The back row are safe again from the girls. Brenna Gethers and Kinnik Sky are safe as is Melissa McGhee. Ryan asks Heather Cox and Stevie Scott to join him in on the stage and then tells Heather Cox to take a seat which means Stevie Scott is the second girl to be packing her bags tonight.

The front row of guys are all safe meaning they will be here again next week. The back row stand next to Ryan and he gets them all to sit back down except for Bucky Covington and Patrick Hall. Ryan tells Bucky Covington that he's safe so Patrick Hall is the final contestant to be going home tonight.

So tonight we farewell Becky O'Donohue, Stevie Scott, Bobby Bennett and Patrick Hall.

American Idol Episode 12 - Final 12 Boys perform - Review

Submitted by The Critic on Wed, 2006-02-22 18:38

The girls have had their turn to impress and now tonight, the final 12 remaining boys will perform in the hopes that they can win your vote.

The girls were pretty good but will Randy's assertion that the guys have themselves in the box seat ring true tonight. Let's find out!

Randy tells the boys that they really need to bring it tonight because the Girls bought the house down last night. Before they perform we get to see how they all got to be in the final 24 to the backing track of Robbie Williams' Let Me Entertain You Let Me Entertain You

First up tonight is:

Patrick Hall
Song choice: Come To My Window Come to My Window
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 01
TXT Vote to 5701
My Thoughts: I really liked Patrick's subdued performance in the Hollywood round but this just seems a little cheesy and perhaps a little desperate. An ok performance but nothing sensational.
Paula: Stick to what you do best because you are an amazing performer. You have a niche that no one else in the competition has so stick with that.
Randy: says he felt his nerves. Once you hit it is was good.
Simon: What Paula is trying to say is that it was a great song but not for you. You look like you're missing your piano. You didn't show any star quality but I like your voice.

David Radford
Song choice: Crazy Little Thing Called Love Crazy Little Thing Called Love
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 02
TXT Vote to 5702
My Thoughts: I don't mind a little crooning but I'm not sure I like this rendition. However David is a real performer and he is totally getting in to the song so he gets points for that.
Paula: Disagrees with Randy and says he carried on with who he is.
Randy: Randy thought it was terrible. No originality. Pitchy.
Simon: Understands where Randy was coming from but thinks the people at home will like him.

Bucky Covington
Song choice: Simple Man Simple Man
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 03
TXT Vote to 5703
My Thoughts: Bucky is certainly no Bo Bice. There's plenty of gravel in his voice but it would probably be better spent paving roads than singing. A very average performance. I think we may have a contender for Thursday night's elimination.
Paula: You picked a good song and you're growing.
Randy: You don't need to sing so hard cause you have a nice tone.
Simon: I think you did better with the band than any other times we've heard you but I think you could hear anyone like him at any bar in America.

Will Makar
Song choice: I Want You Back I Want You Back
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 04
TXT Vote to 5704
My Thoughts: I am pleasantly surprised to see Will perform tonight. He's actually a really good performer and has completely shattered my previous expectations.
Paula: Every high school girl is in love. You were adorable.
Randy: I was entertained
Simon: I was a nice looking kid, enthusiastic but vocally it was average. No one will listen back to that and go "What a great singer".

Jose "Sway" Penala
Song choice: Reasons Reasons
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 05
TXT Vote to 5705
My Thoughts: His falsetto is a bit pitchy and I'm a little bored by his performance.
Paula: You know how good you are and you deserved to be on the stage.
Randy: You showed originality and was great in falsetto.
Simon: I thought it was a really pimpy, third rate copy of Earth, Wind and Fire

Chris Daughtry
Song choice: Wanted Dead or Alive Wanted Dead or Alive
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 06
TXT Vote to 5706
My Thoughts: I really like Chris. He's a fantastic performer and his voice has just enough rasp in it to really make it sound great.
Paula: I am so wowed by you. You are going to go all the way.
Randy: That was really, really good. I think you're very current and a great recording voice. You've got it.
Simon: That was a very good choice of song. For the first time tonight I'm hearing someone with potential.

Kevin Covais
Song choice: One Last Cry One Last Cry
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 07
TXT Vote to 5707
My Thoughts: Kevin Covais could very well be the next Clay Aiken. He's not what you'd expect an Idol to look like but he has a nice voice and will probably earn the underdog title which could see him go a long way.
Paula: You make me beam and you make me feel proud. You're a sheer joy and I'm very proud of you.
Randy: I really, really like you. You're such a nice honest kid and that was the bomb.
Simon: I like you but that would appeal to anyone over the age of 90 who is hard of hearing.

Gedeon McKinney
Song choice: Shout Shout
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 08
TXT Vote to 5708
My Thoughts: I'm sure Gedeon is having fun with this song but quite frankly, I'm bored.
Paula: What a great surprise. You have that energy in your soul. I thought it was marvelous.
Randy: Good song choice. I like your performance and you sang in tune. I was entertained.
Simon: I thought I was watching a warm up show for the Chipendales. Your smile bothers me.

Elliott Yamin
Song choice: If You Really Love Me If You Really Love Me
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 09
TXT Vote to 5709
My Thoughts: Elliott is a very accomplished performer and his song choice isn't too bad but again I'm not blown away. Above average but not astoundingly wow.
Paula: What I love most about you is that it's effortless.
Randy: You sounded brilliant. You've got it and it was hot tonight.
Simon: I think potentially you are the best male vocalist we've ever had after five seasons of American Idol

Bobby Bennett
Song choice: Copacabana Copacabana
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 10
TXT Vote to 5710
My Thoughts: I can't believe we have a Las Vegas hotel performer on the American Idol stage. Oh well. I guess someone has to be first to go home. Congratulations Bobby. Now get off the stage.
Paula: We've all enjoyed your showmanship.
Randy: It's like I'm watching someone from a different era. You're more entertaining than you are vocally inspiring.
Simon: I like you but that was a complete nightmare. I think I'm with Randy on the entertaining thing but then again, horror films entertain me as well.

Ace Young
Song choice: Father Figure Father Figure
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 11
TXT Vote to 5711
My Thoughts: This is the first performance that has really made me sit up and listen intently to the song. It's a fantastic song choice for Ace. I can see Ace going a long way in this competition.
Paula: You're a star. Those eyes, hello.
Randy: You are definitely a star working the room and the camera. You've really got it going on and you can really sing. I'm loving you!
Simon: Two other guys have sung better than you but you have the X factor and you'll absolutely sail through to the next round.

Taylor Hicks
Song choice: Levon Levon
Ph Vote: 1 866 43657 12
TXT Vote to 5712
My Thoughts: There is definitely something unique about Taylor. He's going to sail through to the finals.
Paula: Everything exudes from you and we love you and I think we saved the best for last.
Randy: You are Original with a capital O. Not sure it was the best song choice because it didn't show how talented you really are. I love you and I loved the performance.
Simon: I was wrong. What I like about you is that you're interesting. I've had more positive feedback about you than anyone else in the competition.

What are your thoughts on tonight's performances? Who were your favourites. Tomorrow night it is the LIVE results show where two guys and two girls will be going home.
