So Melissa McGhee is gone and we're down to 11. This week our American Idol contestants are singing hits from the 50's. David Radford must be guttered he's not here this week. How will Kevin Covais do considering this may be the style of music the majority of his fans listen to anyway. Who knows? Buckle up though cause we're about to get busy.

Barry Manilow Barry Manilow had our Idols come to meet him in Vegas in between rehearsals this week to celebrate his 35 year long career and the release of his new album Barry Manilow - The Greatest Songs of the Fifties - Barry Manilow - The Greatest Songs of the Fifties The Greatest Songs of the Fifties he's helping the contestants prepare for this week's show.

Mandisa Hundley
Song choice: Dinah Washington - First Issue - The Dinah Washington Story - I Don't Hurt Anymore I Don't Hurt Anymore
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5701
TXT Vote to 5701
My Thoughts: Mandisa is a true diva but she isn't going to win American Idol. I predict she'll be going home around the top 5/6. Good song choice for her and she looks glamorous.
Randy: I'm a little speechless. What a classy way to start the show. What's cool is that you've set the mark.
Paula: You took me right back to the 50's. You're a thoroughbred.
Simon: You are blossoming. Apart from the vocal, it was a very sexy performance. It's a great stripper song. I absolutely loved it.

Bucky Covington
Song choice: Buddy Holly & The Crickets - The "Chirping" Crickets - Oh Boy! Oh Boy!
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5702
TXT Vote to 5702
My Thoughts: This seems to be a strange song choice to me. Is this Bucky coming out of the closet? The song sounds flat and empty. I'm glad that's over. That was horrible.
Randy: That was a great song choice for you and I like the mic moves. The falsetto was great.
Paula: Great choice of song. Good song performance.
Simon: Now I'm going to give you a reality check. It was nothing more than a pointless karaoke contest. If someone had tuned in to see that for the first time they would have been saying so what.

Paris Bennett
Song choice: The Monkees - Headquarters Sessions - Fever Fever
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5703
TXT Vote to 5703
My Thoughts: I always look forward to Paris' performances and this is no exception. I love the key change. The ending was sensational.
Randy: I wasn't sure how that was going to go at the start but you blew it out the box the rest of the song.
Paula: I forgot you were 17 with some of those moves. You look phenomenal. Your vocals were impeccable.
Simon: This is what you do best. You have the perfect voice for that kind of song.

Chris Daughtry
Song choice: Johnny Cash - Walk the Line, Vol. 1 - I Walk the Line Walk The Line
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5704
TXT Vote to 5704
My Thoughts: I absolutely love this version. Chris is a real star. A few notes here and there that were out but what a fantastic performance.
Randy: I don't think it was the best vocal you've done on the show but you put your own spin on a song everyone knows. You're ready.
Paula: There are a few of you American Idols that I really look forward to every week. You should already be touring and we should be buying tickets.
Simon: I don't think it was the best vocal either but I don't think that matters. It was completely different to what I hated about Bucky's performance. And I think you're the first contestant we've had who has compromised who he is.

Katharine McPhee
Song choice: Bobby Caldwell - Come Rain or Come Shine - Come Rain or Come Shine Come Rain or Come Shine
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5705
TXT Vote to 5705
My Thoughts: I love Katharine. This competition is so hot this year. Performances like this really show up performances like Bucky's. Wow!
Randy: It wasn't my favourite performance but it was a tough song to sing but you worked it out.
Paula: You look absolutely exquisite and I think you'll be a contendor the whole way through this competition.
Simon: Something happened tonight and I think that was that tonight you turned into a star. That falls into the "special" category. I loved it.

Taylor Hicks
Song choice: The Band & The Crickets - Not Fade Away - Remembering Buddy Holly - Not Fade Away Not Fade Away
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5706
TXT Vote to 5706
My Thoughts: I'm loving the suit that matches his hair color. I'm waiting for the song to explode and it does with the saxophone player coming out to join Taylor on stage. Taylor is really loving being out on that stage. Another consistent Taylor Hicks performance.
Randy: Dude. You're having a blast running around. I don't think it was the most challenging song for you but I love you.
Paula: I love so much about you. Someone should be shooting you and turning it into an exercise video.
Simon: Sorry, but if that was the first time you'd seen that performance out of context but that was like a hideous party performance. It is a singing competition in case you've forgotten.

Lisa Tucker
Song choice: Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons - Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons: Hits - Why Do Fools Fall In Love Why do Fools Fall in Love
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5707
TXT Vote to 5707
My Thoughts: With all the old songs that Lisa has been singing, this has to be one of the least impressive. She's really talented but if she doesn't start to pull out some numbers that reflect her age then she'll be outta here sooner rather than later.
Randy: Good song choice for you. But I don't think it was the best. It got good at the end.
Paula: You're a powerhouse and I think you have a big career ahead of you.
Simon: I feel like I'm trapped in some high school musical and I want to leave.

Kevin Covais
Song choice: Chris Botti - When I Fall In Love - When I Fall In Love When I Fall In Love
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5708
TXT Vote to 5708
My Thoughts: Kevin is just so Disney. I can hear him doing soundtracks to children's animated movies in the future.
Randy: That is one of my favourite songs. I like you. There is something about you.
Paula: It takes a lot of courage to start a song singing 10 feet away from Simon. People adore you. You did another good job tonight.
Simon: Kevin, I like you because you're like a man. You take it well. I think your audience is going to love that version.

Elliott Yamin
Song choice: Phoebe Snow - It Looks Like Snow - Teach Me Tonight Teach Me Tonight
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5709
TXT Vote to 5709
My Thoughts: Elliott can certainly sing but I'm a little bored by this song despite him singing it well.
Randy: You worked it out!
Paula: I got goose bumps. You moved me. You're fantastic and you're so needed in this competition.
Simon: It was fantastic.

Kellie Pickler
Song choice: Betty Dempsey - Walking After Midnight - Walking After Midnight Walking After Midnight
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5710
TXT Vote to 5710
My Thoughts: Woah. Someone needs to tell the makeup department to settle down. Talk about overkill! This is certainly not Kellie's best performance by far. My gosh that makeup is terrible! Did I say that already?
Randy: Great song choice. The country pop girl is back.
Paula: You were the tigeress tonight. This was a ture Kellie Pickler performance.
Simon: You got this absolutely right. It was ballsy. It was sexy. Welcome back.

Ace Young
Song choice: Johnny Mathis - In the Still of the Night - In the Still of the Night (I'll Remember) In the Still of the Night
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5711
TXT Vote to 5711
My Thoughts: Another typical Ace Young performance catering to the 8-12 year old girls who watch this show.
Randy: You know what. Ace is back tonight.
Paula: There are 34 signs that say Ace will you marry me. It was amazing.
Simon: It wasn't the best vocal tonight but I don't think that is going to matter. It wasn't your best performance but it was better than last week and I don't think you'll be in the bottom three this week.

Taylor Hicks dyeing to be American Idol

Submitted by The Critic on Fri, 2006-03-17 15:44

According to TMZ.com, Taylor Hicks is about to start losing his trademark grey hair. The transformation wont be immediate but rather a gradual process that will begin this week.

I'm not sure this is entirely the best move for Taylor if he is going to try and conform to the Hollywood image police. Taylor is unique in the competition and removing part of who he is may cost him some fans.

What do you think?

American Idol Extra - Episode 1 Review

Submitted by The Critic on Wed, 2006-03-15 21:24
American Idol Extra

After the elimination show each week, cable channel Fox Reality will be screening "American Idol Extra", a closer look at the American Idol show with exit interviews from the eliminated contestant as well as trivia, behind the scenes info and what's happening with our old contestants.

The show is fronted by Ty Treadway and has Season 4 finalist, Mikalah Gordon and Season 3 finalist Matt Rogers assisting him with interviews etc.

Ty is standing on the stage with Melissa McGhee only moments after the elimination show had ended. Melissa says that she was kinda expecting it tonight but is so glad that she's done it and that it's been unreal and that she never thought it would happen but now she can go home to the beach.

Matt is loving being back on the Idol stage with all the tension and excitement that comes with a show where people are voted off. Both Matt and Mikalah made it through the first round of finals but went home at the second elimination. They are thankful that they'll be around for longer in this season of American Idol.

We recap the Stevie Wonder Stevie Wonder performances of the Top 12 before Matt takes us backstage to talk with some of the celebrities who are fans of the show. Eric Millegan from Bones, Tori Spelling, Season 3 contestant John Peter Lewis and N'Sync member Lance Bass. Lance says that Simon's comments are usually right on. Tori says that there are some great performers but thinks that Paris, Taylor, Katharine and Chris are the best. Her advice is that "success is the best revenge". If Lance was performing a Stevie Wonder song it would have been Stevie Wonder - The Complete Stevie Wonder - In Square Circle - Overjoyed Overjoyed.

Season One finalist Nikki McKibbin asks a trivia question going into the break. Justin Guarini has a famous cousin. Who is it? Denzel Washington, Brian Austin Green, Samuel L. Jackson or Vin Diesel? The answer, is Samuel L. Jackson.

Ty is in the studio talking with Deborah Byrd, the vocal arranger and coach for the girls. Ty asks her how proud she was of everything Melissa accomplished. She says she was very proud but she's sure she didn't sleep well after she forgot her lyrics. Ty asks if that one mistake out her off for the rest of the show but Byrd says that she had taught her some acting things and that when you make a mistake you need to let it go and forget about it move forward and she thought she sang the rest of the song well. Ty asks how much influence Byrd has on the contestants song choice. She says that she suggests singers to listen to but she can't pick their songs for them. She talks about how Clay used to beg for her to blink if it was a good song choice and how Kelly wanted help in ending her song. Ty asks her who she thinks will win cause she should know being so close and on the inside but she says that she doesn't know and that it comes down to people voting. They talk about the first show a little and how they call it the first day of school.

Matt is backstage in the VIP tent with the cast of The Loop - another plug for a Fox show.

Justin Guarini is releasing a new Jazz record which is certainly different from the pop album he released after he was the runner up on American Idol Season One. He's using standards in his album but he's putting a different infusion of soul into it. He thought his first album didn't have a theme and was more of a throw it on the wall and see what sticks kinda album. He refers to his American Idol experience as entertainment 101 which was good but now he's ready to move on.

Ty reminds us that Justin has starred in a feature film, recorded his own album, started his own company and somehow me managed to find time to get a haircut.

Matt is backstage with Melissa's family. They are very proud of her. Her mom didn't think she'd be going home tonight but thought she'd be in the bottom after she forgot her words and if she'd sung like she did after being eliminated on the performance show then she'd probably still be here. Melissa arrives and Matt asks her what is going through her mind right now. Emotionally she says she is happy to be seeing her family. Matt reminds her that the journey is just begun. Melissa's mom says that there have been people from the past that have been turning up now that Melissa has become famous.

Going into the Adbreak, American Idol contestant from Season 4 Anthony Federov has another tivia question. There were only two American Idol winners that were able to avoid being in the bottom 3 for the entire competition. Who were they? The answer of course is Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.

Last season's runner up, Bo Bice has released an album The Real Thing and we get a bit of a look behind the scenes at his first video. Bo asks whether he's going to be liked or just remembered as the guy from Idol and is grateful for being the guy who was sitting on the couch to performing to more than 40million people to working in the studio with some great performers. Bo tells us about how his position as a celebrity has enabled him to help those from his home in Alabama who were affected by hurricane katrina. He said they spent two days working on the music video but he hardly felt like he was working because he loves it and he felt like being a little kid again.

Mikalah gives us the goss of what's happening with Idol. She tells us that after Idol, she never got to go to prom after being so busy so Simon never had the opportunity to take her. Season Two's Kimberley Locke is now the new spokesmodel for Lane Bryants new clothing line that will be debuting this summer. Josh Gracin is touring the US. Last week George Huff from Season Two performed at the New Orleans arena at the Celebration of Hope concert. Amy Adams has picked up a role in the musical Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Next up is Melissa McGhee's first sit down interview. Pre ads trivia: Did you know that Melissa McGhee's First Solo Singing Perforamance was in a pageant at age 7?

We get to see Melissa's audition details and when we first met her. She performed LeAnn Rimes - Coyote Ugly - Can't Fight the Moonlight Can't Fight The Moonlight for her audition and she has a horse stuffed toy named moose.

Ty asks her how it feels watching her audition back. She says that it feels like it was ages ago because that was the first audition of many before you actually make it to the finals and that she was really nervous but she was 15 million times more nervous last night but the nervousness last night was to remember the words.

Melissa tells us that she gargles with Olive Oil. She thinks that the whole new environment with the big stage and audience was just a bit too much and may have put her off her game. She says that a lot of the people back stage had said that if they'd forgotten their words they probably would have stopped and burst into tears.

In response to Simon's comment that it was her best performance, Melissa says that her farewell performance was probably her best performance of the series despite it being tough to fight back all that emotion.

Melissa says that she really misses Heather Cox the most and it's going to be weird being by herself after being with 13 other people for ages.

We take a look back at Melissa's American Idol journey from the last four months. Ty asks how much she's grown as an artist from the experience. Melissa says that she never thought a career was possible but now she has so many opportunities. She says she wouldn't change anything other than perhaps remebering her lyrics.

She'll miss the whole stage thing with having fans and performing and all the friends that she has made from being on American Idol. Melissa isn't sure where she is heading now but she wants to stick around in the entertainment industry.

Melissa tells us that backstage everyone is practicing their songs before the show starts and they all pray together. Some of them have a bit of a jog but everyone has their own way to prepare.

Ace Young
Song choice: Do I Do Stevie Wonder - The Complete Stevie Wonder - Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium I (Disc 2) - Do I Do
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5701
TXT Vote to 5701
My Thoughts: Ace is playing right into the palms of his audience tonight with this song choice. I'm not the biggest fan of Ace's but he's doing well with this song. Good choice.
Randy: I was excited about tonight cause of Stevie but I was worried cause he's hard to sing. I liked your energy but it was just alright for me.
Paula: I think you started off the night fantastic. You even had some cool dance moves in there.
Simon: Luckily for you this audience is very easily pleased. It won't be the best vocal tonight, I can guarantee that.

Kellie Pickler
Song choice: Blame it on the Sun Stevie Wonder - The Complete Stevie Wonder - Talking Book - Blame It On the Sun
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5702
TXT Vote to 5702
My Thoughts: It's a very simple song and it sounds a little too low for her. A tad boring to be honest, compared to the last few weeks.
Randy: Very strange song choice for you. All that spark that is Kellie Pickler wasn't there and vocally I think the key was low but I loved the shoes.
Paula: You could tell you were a little nervous. The little razzle dazzle that you bring didn't show up.
Simon: Everything went wrong tonight. It looks like you went to Dolly Parton school. It was all old and safe and boring. Your worst performance so far.

Elliott Yamin
Song choice: Knocks Me Off My Feet Stevie Wonder - The Complete Stevie Wonder - Songs In the Key of Life (Disc 1) - Knocks Me Off My Feet
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5703
TXT Vote to 5703
My Thoughts: Nice move to start off on the stool. The only problem I have is that it doesn't sound very original. There is nothing wrong with Elliott's voice but he needs to get a bit of spark happening. In saying that, it was a very nice ending though.
Randy: So this is your comfort zone. I didn't think this was your best performance and it was a bit ordinary but that not at the end was great.
Paula: I love your passion and you're an amazing singer and we'll be seeing more of you.
Simon: That didn't have the wow factor. It was a good rendition but we need to see some originality.

Mandisa Hundley
Song choice: Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing Stevie Wonder - The Complete Stevie Wonder - Innervisions - Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5704
TXT Vote to 5704
My Thoughts: I was expecting more from Mandisa tonight. But it turns out she's just warming up. The start of the song was a bit lack lustre but she finishes it off well and in style.
Randy: You were amazing last week but you weren't as good this week. So far tonight though, you're the best.
Paula: What Stevie said is true. You can sing anything.
Simon: Now we have a competition. Best so far.

Bucky Covington
Song choice: Superstition Stevie Wonder - The Complete Stevie Wonder - Talking Book - Superstition
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5705

Randy:
Paula:
Simon:

Kevin Covais
Song choice: Part-time Lover Stevie Wonder - The Complete Stevie Wonder - In Square Circle - Part-Time Lover
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5708
TXT Vote to 5708
My Thoughts:
Randy:
Paula:
Simon:

Katharine McPhee
Song choice: Until You Come Back To Me Stevie Wonder - At the Close of a Century - Until You Come Back to Me (That's What I'm Gonna Do)
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5709
TXT Vote to 5709
My Thoughts:
Randy:
Paula:
Simon:

Taylor Hicks
Song choice: Living For The City Stevie Wonder - The Complete Stevie Wonder - Innervisions - Living for the City
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5710
TXT Vote to 5710
My Thoughts: I can imagine Taylor Hicks as one of those Tele-Evangelists with his dance moves.
Randy:
Paula:
Simon:

Paris Bennett
Song choice: All I Do Stevie Wonder - The Complete Stevie Wonder - Additional Singles & Rarities - All I Do (Single Version) [Alternate Intro]
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5711
TXT Vote to 5711
My Thoughts:
Randy:
Paula:
Simon:

Chris Daughtry
Song choice: Higher Ground Stevie Wonder - The Complete Stevie Wonder - Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium I (Disc 2) - Higher Ground
Ph Vote: 1 866 436 5712
TXT Vote to 5712
My Thoughts: I don't think this is the best performance of Chris' that I've seen but he is such the rocker.
Randy: Every week you figure out a way to make it your own. You worked it out.
Paula: I never worry. I just sit back and enjoy. That was fantastic.
Simon: Thank God for Chris. We had some good performances tonight but that was the only real world performance. Best tonight by a mile.
