Kansas Auditions 2009

Submitted by The Critic on Wed, 2009-01-14 19:44

Tonight the American Idol audition tour bus rolls into Kansas, MO - the home of last years winner - David Cook.

I'm going to try and live recap the show tonight so please bear with me if I get anything wrong.

Ashley Anderson is through but I missed her song. (sorry)

A fun loving Casey Carlson sings Vanessa Carlton - Be Not Nobody - A Thousand Miles A Thousand Miles and continues the shows run of Golden Tickets off.

David Cook's parents assure Ryan that there is some great other talent in Kansas. Von Smith proves them right with a powerful rendition of Katharine McPhee - Somewhere Over the Rainbow / My Destiny - Single - Somewhere Over the Rainbow Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Of course he's through despite the ad break.

Jason Castro's brother Michael auditions in 2009 and is up for showing up his brother. He sings Gavin DeGraw - Gavin DeGraw - In Love With a Girl I'm in love with a Girl and Simon thought it was good-ish. I'm with Simon when he says he can't really tell whether the Castro boys are really into it or not. He gets a yes and a golden ticket to Hollywood anyway.

Matt Breitzke brings a little Bill Withers - Just As I Am - Ain't No Sunshine Ain't No Sunshine to the table and is rewarded with a ticket to Hollywood.

Jessica Furney is proud of her Wizard of Oz home town and the fact that she lives with her near deaf grandmother who probably wont have heard her sing Janis Joplin - Janis Joplin's Greatest Hits - Cry Baby Cry Baby and make it through to the next round of American Idol in Hollywood.

India manages to make it through with Wishbone Ash - Wishbone Four - So Many Things to Say So Many Things to Say while her sister Asia misses out but she's happy for her sister and her dream.

Speaking of dreams, Jamar Rogers also takes hold of a golden ticket with David Hasselhoff - Sings America - California Dreaming California Dreaming.

Four weeks before the audition, music teacher Danny Gokey's wife Sophia passed away in an emotional story. He sings Marvin Gaye - Motown 1's - I Heard It Through the Grapevine I heard it through the Grapevine and Randy thought he was one of the best they've heard so far and he's through to Hollywood.

Anoop Degai is also off to Hollywood but I missed his song again.

Middle school band director Asa Barnes really shows how good he is with Michael Jackson - Essential Michael Jackson - The Way You Make Me Feel The Way You Make Me Feel and easily scores a golden ticket.

Dennis Brigham dupes the judges - other than Simon of course - and ends up somehow getting a ticket to Hollywood just so his (apparently this is the story) family who had come in to see him succeed would see his dream fulfilled. Simon wasn't impressed and neither was I.

Finally is Lil Rounds who is a real contender when she sings Stevie Wonder - Hotter Than July - All I Do All I Do and has the judges thinking she is the best they've seen.

27 made it through from Kansas City.

Does anyone know the song that was playing in the background of the Danny Gokey interview? The was the one who's wife passed away?

anyone know the title of the

anyone know the title of the song from tonight's show, during the credits ?

Between Jason and David A

Between Jason and David A last season I thought my eardrum were suffering irrepairable damage. If I have to begin again with siblings I'll just quit watching.

Then there is the whole issue of people who aren't good begging to get through vs those who are borderline getting sent home. Who knew that whining would have such impact?

Ashley's song was

Ashley's song was "Footprints in the Sand" ... Simon's got a writing credit on it.

Michael Castro looked like an Andy Samberg character.

I couldn't agree more with

I couldn't agree more with you about the Castro boy. Jason bored me to sleep last year with his same old sound every single week.

Rumor has it that young Michael doesn't make it passed the Hollywood round though.

... I hardly survived Jason

...

I hardly survived Jason Castro's lack-luster laid back give a damn attitude last year, now I have to put up with his retro punk little brother too.

I am waiting for David A's little sister to come out with that innocently annoying smile that will wrap up all the 12 year old little boy votes this year.

BAH!
