Submitted by The Critic on Wed, 2007-01-17 14:38

Not since Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard epic Grand Final joust have the American Idol ratings been so big. Yep, that's right! Last night's season 6 premiere - S06E01 - managed to pull in 37.1 million viewers during the 8-10pm timeslot, up a further 4% on last years season premiere of 35.5 million.

American Idol drew more viewers every half hour, beginning with 31 million at 8, growing to 37 million at 8:30, to 39.7 million at 9 and peaking with 41.4 million at 9:30 p.m.

Last night's premiere equals Fox's highest rating premiere ever along side The X-Files on November 2nd, 1997.

American Idol 3 Contestant Jennifer Hudson has taken home the Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Dream Girls.

On winning her award, Jennifer said "Oh my god thank you so much, i have always dreamed but never ever so big, never. This goes beyong anything i've imagined. I just want to thank the hollywood foreign press for this amazing honor. You dont know how much this does for my confidence, because of this. It makes me feel like i'm part of a community."

Jennider Hudson finished in 7th place in the 2004 season of American Idol.

American Idol Mid Season Prediction

Submitted by The Critic on Sun, 2007-01-14 00:27

With a number of midseason predictions already out there, here's one of our predictions that was posted on one of our other websites.

instead of phoning in or txting a vote, voting will consist of buying the song the contestant sings digitally online or on their cellphone.

This will certainly add to the $2.5 billion value of the American Idol franchise, reduce illegal downloads ("buy it legally and it counts!") and make the competition more focussed on their selling-power as a future artist and more about music sales.

This would also potentially catapult a number of contestants directly into the Billboard Hot 100 during the middle of the season.

What do you think? Would you like to see this feature on Idol?

American Idol's Simon Cowell's Playboy interview

Submitted by The Critic on Sat, 2007-01-13 23:47

The February issue of Playboy Magazine (With Battlestar Galactica's Tricia Helfer on the cover) has a candid interview with American Idol's Simon Cowell. One of the more interesting points in the interview is Simon's comparisons between Kelly Clarkson, who he thinks is one of the top 5 singers in the world at the moment and a young Aretha Franklin, and Bob Dylan who he says "bores him to tears" and that he's never bought one of his records.

According to Playboy, Simon would plug his ears and run in the other direction if he were to see a 21-year-old Dylan singing Bob Dylan - Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits - Blowin' in the Wind Blowin' in the Wind.

I am intrigued by all this Dylan chatter. Last year there was a lot of talk about Prince early on in the season and about how he didn't really like the whole Idol thing and yet there he was at the Grand Finale performing two songs.

I wont be at all surprised to see Bob Dylan making an appearance on the show in 2007 after Simon's diatribe.

Paula Abdul on Q13 Fox

For the last few seasons there has been lots of speculation about whether Paula Abdul has rocked up to the set after having a few too many drinks. It looks as though those antics might be set to continue. Check out this clip from You Tube:
