Submitted by The Critic on Wed, 2010-03-17 19:09

Who will be first to go?  Who is about to be sent home knowing that they were the least liked Top 12 contestant on American Idol in 2010?  The girls have been the best so far this season but have the guys all done enough to stick around for another week.

The judges save is back for 2010.  Up until the Top 5, a contestant can be saved if the decision by the judges is unanimous.  Don't be thinking it will be used tonight.

American Idol Predictions - Top 12 2010

Submitted by The Critic on Wed, 2010-03-17 18:04

The infamous question.  Who is going home this week?  Let's take a look at the round up of various polls.

I'm not sure what's happening with Dial Idol this year but their numbers look a little thin.  By their figures, Lee Dewyze is the only contestant who is looking safe.  Their bottom three however are Aaron Kelly, Paige Miles with Andrew Garcia at the bottom

Rickey has the bottom three listed as Tim Urban and Lacey Brown with Katie Stevens taking the bottom spot.

Here on Idolblog, you've written off Lacey Brown as the one going home and will be joined by Katie Stevens and Tim Urban in the bottom three.

Rickey had Siobhan Magnus as the favourite with 43% of the vote while she had 39% here on Idolblog. Crystal Bowersox took 21% and 23% and then Lee Dewyze had 9% on both sites.

The Top 12 perform the hits of the Rolling Stones

Submitted by The Critic on Tue, 2010-03-16 18:12

Tonight we play tribute to one of the biggest rock bands in the history of music. The Rolling Stones The Rolling Stones

It's going to be a massive show.  450 screaming fans are in the audience so the stage is set for the competition proper to begin.

Let's get into it.

Here is the voting information.

Michael Lynche

The Rolling Stones - Some Girls (Remastered) - Miss You Miss You

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: You've definitely got your confidence up after last week but I thought your performance, particularly your dancing, was a little corny.
Kara: First night. Big stage. You have to fill up the stage. You delivered the stones and were hot on stage.
Randy: I wasn't so crazy about the arrangement but you slayed it. Way to start the show dawg
Ellen: What's not to love about that. That's the way to start the night.

My thoughts: That was a pretty hot way to open the show.

Didi Benami

The Rolling Stones - The Darjeeling Limited - Play With Fire Play With Fire

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: You're beginning to show us who you are as an artist. Very good choice of song. Solid but not brilliant performance. I think you can still do better than that.
Kara: I loved the intensity you attacked the lyrics with. You're moving more towards who you are as an artist.
Randy: I think for the first time in weeks, that was your best performance.
Ellen: I was proud you got back into the song and loved how you turned the word fire into two syllables

My thoughts: I actually really liked that. Definitely my favorite performance of hers.

Casey James

The London Years - It's All Over Now It's All Over Now

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: That was like an audition performance for me. You didn't do something incredible on that stage and you need to start using it as a platform and be a star.
Kara: I thought previously that you were trying to be a rock star. Tonight you were a rock star.
Randy: You're back to the Casey that I love.
Ellen: I thought it was fantastic

My thoughts: Casey bores me. He can sing ok and can play a reasonable guitar but his performance just has nothing to draw me in. Perhaps I'm just the wrong demographic.

Lacey Brown

The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks 1964-1971 - Ruby Tuesday Ruby Tuesday

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: You perform like an actress. It's very thought through. I think you need to stop overthinking. Nothing wrong with the vocal though.
Kara: It was 50/50 for me. there were definitely some issues with the vocals. I think you could have put more into it.
Randy: It wasn't a wow moment but you held it together and it was the most interesting song of the night so far.
Ellen: It was a tiny bit sleepy for me but I'm a fan of yours.

My thoughts: It was a little pitchy but it sounded like it could be a radio single.

Andrew Garcia

The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks 1964-1971 - Gimme Shelter Gimme Shelter

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: Something didn't quite connect with the song. I genuinely hope you survive another week.
Kara: I wanted to feel what you were talking about so it was the connection I was missing.
Randy: I love you but it was just pitchy everywhere.
Ellen: I think that was your best performance yet but what do I know.

My thoughts: This is another step backwards from Andrew. The start of the song sounded like he couldn't hear the beat. Pretty disappointing.

Katie Stevens

The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks 1964-1971 - Wild Horses Wild Horses

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: This is the only week where you've chosen a really strong song but I didn't like the second half of the arrangement.
Kara: It's never technically perfect with you. Definitely better than last week.
Randy: I thought it was a very strong performance
Ellen: I thought it started a little pitchy but once you got into it it was great. Good choice of song.

My thoughts: Despite this being an older sounding song, it's still boring. Just because it's an old song doesn't mean you can't inject some youthful energy into it.

Tim Urban

The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks 1964-1971 - Under My Thumb Under My Thumb

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I have to applaud you too but it's quite a boring song anyway but it didn't work. Most Rolling Stones fans would have turned their televisions off after that. I think that was a crazy decision.
Kara: I've got to applaud you for doing something incredibly different with the song.
Randy: I didn't get that man. I didn't really like the reggae version. I didn't understand it.
Ellen: I felt like I was at a resort. You sounded great but you didn't wow us.

My thoughts: Again, boring. What was he thinking? Oh.. he could never be the Rolling Stones so he tried to do something different. Did it work? No.

Siobhan Magnus

The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks 1964-1971 - Paint It Black Paint it Black

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I think it was the stand out performance tonight. Now I can see the development from those middle shows. There will be a lot of people who will love that but there will be a lot of people who would hate it.
Kara: I'm having flash backs of Adam Lambert. Most interesting.
Randy: Bringing the drama to season 9. That was hot.
Ellen: I love th e way you look. I love the way you sound.

My thoughts: Siobhan is amazing. She starts off so subtly and then by the end she is rocking it. Definitely the performance of the night so far.

Lee Dewyze

The Rolling Stones - Jump Back - The Best of the Rolling Stones 1971-93 (Remastered) - Beast of Burden Beast of Burden

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: Your personality doesn't shine. You have an incredibly good voice and I pray that you'll be back next week to give us a moment on this stage. I feel that you think people are better than you.
Kara: Every week you're getting better. We should celebrate your tremendous growth.
Randy: I thought that was one of your better performances
Ellen: I was expecting more from you. It was like a hospital gown. It didn't quite come together.

My thoughts: Boring. Lee has such a long way to go if you wants to be a memorable performer. That was just dull.

Paige Miles

The Rolling Stones - Hot Rocks 1964-1971 - Honky Tonk Women Honky Tonk Woman

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: Taking into account the fact that you had laryngitis this week, that was great. There were moments where we heard the big voice we loved in Hollywood.
Kara: For someone who has had issues with your voice this week, you hit some big notes. I think Paige is back.
Randy: You did alright with that. I wish it had more energy but I liked it.
Ellen: You have such great presence on stage.

My thoughts: Definitely better than she has been in the past but it was still a little shaky in parts vocally.

Aaron Kelly

The Rolling Stones - Goats Head Soup (Remastered) - Angie Angie

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I did fear for you this week but actually you absolutely chose the right song. You sang it within the limit of your rang and it was believable.
Kara: When you connect with the feeling of the song it's really powerful
Randy: Your mum was absolutely right. You were born to sing. The tender moments were like Justin Timberlake. I thought it was hot.
Ellen: I thought that was such a great song choice for you and next to Siobhan it was the best tonight.

My thoughts: It wasn't massive but it was sung well.

Crystal Bowersox

The Rolling Stones - Let It Bleed - You Can't Always Get What You Want You Can't Always Get What You Want

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: You came out tonight the 100% clear favorite but this is the first time I think you've been beaten by someone.
Kara: You loosened up tonight. It's so easy to watch.
Randy: I always look forward to you. It wasn't your best performance though.
Ellen: you are so much fun to watch on stage. You've got the singing though so have fun on stage.

My thoughts: Love Crystal. She's awesome. Definitely another brilliant performance from her.

Bottom three this week?  Andrew Garcia, Katie Stevens and Tim Urban.  Somehow I suspect it will be Lacey Brown in there somewhere though.

Who is going to make the Top 12 of American Idol 2010?

Submitted by The Critic on Thu, 2010-03-11 19:08

This is it folks.  Tonight we get to find out who will be in the Top 12 for the 2010 season of American Idol.

It's a tight race at the bottom for the girls with Paige Miles, Katelyn Epperly, Lilly Scott and Lacey Brown all don't make the 10% mark, all being close together on 3%.

As long as Paige Miles goes home, it looks like most people will be happy.

Despite his big performance last night, Todrick Hall just doesn't have the votes in our poll.  Both he and Aaron Kelly take out the bottom two spots while Tim Urban is the only other male not making it passed the 10% line.

Todrick Hall really is the guy you don't want in the Top 12 either.

Results are next people!

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon:
Kara:
Randy:
Ellen:

My thoughts:

Alex Lambert

Ray LaMontagne - Trouble - Trouble Trouble

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: You need to get yourself somewhere else mentally. We haven't seen you relax. Think about Randy in a bikini.trouble t
Kara: The only thing standing in front of you from winning is you. We need vulnerability from you. Be you and let go.
Randy: That was a good song choice for you. I wasn't jumping up and down though. Maybe a little too slow for you
Ellen: You're becoming a mushy banana. You're ripening so fast. You consistently get better and better and better.

My thoughts: Was ok. Nothing to write home about though. Really.

Tim Urban

Jeff Buckley - Grace - Hallelujah Hallelujah

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I kinda feel responsible for how good you were tonight. Very smart with that song. Not the best version but the best performance you've given so far on American Idol
Kara: I thought you were going home a couple of weeks ago but now I think you're near the top of the boys.
Randy: You walked in some pretty big shoes and I thought you did a pretty good job.
Ellen: *Races to the stage and hugs him*

My thoughts: I really liked that. Definitely the best performance he's given so far. Pretty lucky considering he was the pick to go in the first week of the finals.

Andrew Garcia

Christina Aguilera - Christina Aguilera - Genie In a Bottle Genie in a Bottle

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: It was a little bit desperate, I thought. You're going backwards at the moment though.
Kara: You peaked so early in the competition and now you're fighting with it. I was disappointed. It just wasn't great but I wanted it to be.
Randy: Very interesting song choice. It didn't quite work for me and it was a little pitchy. You made it feel like it had three notes.
Ellen: I think the genie came out of the bottle a little too late but I think people will like that.

My thoughts: Oh how the mighty are fallen. Disappointing. Tragic even. What has happened to Andrew's star?

Casey James

Keith Urban - Golden Road - You'll Think of Me You'll Think of Me

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon:
Kara:
Randy: That was a little bit safe for me.
Ellen:

My thoughts: That bored me to death!

Aaron Kelly

Lonestar - I'm Already There - I'm Already There i'm Already There

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: It's a beautiful song and the right type of song for you. It wasn't a great vocal.
Kara: I love you but how can you feel a connection with the song when you're only sixteen.
Randy: When you hit your power zone in the middle I was like This Boy Can Sing
Ellen: The way you carry yourself is real. You sound older than you are but I thought that song was a little bit big for you.

My thoughts: Definitely his kinda song but it, again, bored me until he got to the big moment at the end of the song.

Todrick Hall

Greatest Hits I & II - Somebody to Love Somebody to Love

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I would say it was good in parts. I think tonight you told us you're a broadway singer and I see you as that more than a recording artist.
Kara: You can't listen to that and say it wasn't good singing.
Randy: Todrick is back. You just proved you can sing. That was one of the best vocals I've heard by a man this season.
Ellen: You're a brave young man. You did a good job.

My thoughts: Nice to have something with a bit of life in it tonight. Performance of the night so far IMHO.

Michael Lynche

Kate Bush - The Sensual World - This Woman's Work This Woman's Work

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: This was so needed tonight. It was all a little boring at the start of the show and then you came out with not only the best performance of the night but of all the performance shows so far.
Kara: I have never cried after a performance and as a woman who doesn't have a child, I could relate.
Randy: That was hot!
Ellen: One of my favorite songs. Wow. This show just began. You're the one to beat now.

My thoughts: I didn't really like it if I'm being completely honest but that's because it was just another slow song. However, I get what he was trying to do and obviously he connected with the audience he was aiming at.

Bottom two this week for me would Andrew Garcia and Adam Lambert

Tomorrow night, the Top 12 are revealed

American Idol Top 16 Girls perform - Live Blog

Submitted by The Critic on Tue, 2010-03-09 19:10

We're back to normal this week with the girls taking to the stage for the first night.  Here's what happened.

Here is the voting information.

Katie Stevens

Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway - Breakaway Breakaway

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I think this has been pretty confusing for you.  You've been given a lot of advice and you've taken it on but I don't think you know who you are as an artist.  I have to give you 10/10 for trying though.
Kara: You have a great radio voice but I don't think you know who you are as an artist yet but you can't deny the talent that you have.
Randy: That paled in comparison to the original
Ellen: I thought that was the right song for you but I don't think you were feeling what you were singing.

My thoughts: Katie is so out of her element.  Points for trying but she is so not ready for the big time.

Siobhan Magnus

The Animals - Retrospective - House of the Rising Sun House of the Rising Sun

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I wasn't such a fan of that.  It was all a bit weird.  If that was the first time I saw you... it was all a bit dark and boring.  I didn't get it.
Kara: I loved the accapella vibe at the front.  Week to week I am surprized by you.
Randy: I love what you do.  I don't think you listen to us at all but keep doing what you do.
Ellen: You are why I love music.  You made it current.  You move me.  You're spectacular.

My thoughts: How good is Siobhan?  If she's not already a favorite to be the 9th American Idol then she quite possibly is now.

Lacey Brown

Brandi Carlile - The Story - The Story The Story

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I didn't love the song but you sang it really well and that was like listening to something on the radio.  I still haven't heard the right song connection yet.
Kara: Performances like this is what got you here.  This is the kinda record you need to be doing and you're back on your path.
Randy: To me, the song was a little boring but that was your best performance in a long time.  It was very cool
Ellen: It was your best performance to date.  I thought it was really good.

My thoughts: This is so much better than last week. Perfect song for Lacey. Will be interesting if she can save a space in the Top 12 with that performance.

Katelyn Epperly

Carole King - Tapestry - I Feel the Earth Move I Feel the Earth Move

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I like your hair.  It was kinda like request night in a restaurant.  I don't think you didn't try hard enough with that.
Kara: I didn't feel like you were competing tonight.  I thought you were more in the zone last week.
Randy: It felt very put on for me but you sung it well.
Ellen: I don't know that that was the song to wow people and them to dial and vote for you.

My thoughts: That was a pretty good vocal performance by Katelyn and nice to have it being an up tempo number.

Didi Benami

Fleetwood Mac - Rumours - Dreams Dreams

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I thought that was head and shoulders above anything else we've heard tonight. I think the whole performance was a wow moment.
Kara: One of my favorite moments of the series so far.
Randy: Definitely a whole lot better than last week
Ellen: to that I say "Yes indeedy Didi

My thoughts: Wow. That was great. Someone came to play this week.

Paige Miles

Tony Bennett - The Ultimate Tony Bennett - Smile Smile

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: It was a horrible choice of song and the arrangement was horrible. I call that a peanut performance cause it was like sitting at a bar eating peanuts while someone sings in the background. I think this is the end of the road for you.
Kara: What can I say? It was all wrong.
Randy: That just didn't work at all
Ellen: That song is supposed to be inspiring and I just don't think that was the right song to choose.

My thoughts: Ouch. Really pitchy. It was a nice idea but she has to be going home after that, surely.

Crystal Bowersox

Tracy Chapman - New Beginning - Give Me One Reason Give Me One Reason

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: You are one million percent going to be in the Top 12. You are the one to beat and it's yours to lose.
Kara: You just know what to do.
Randy: Loved that. That was hot.
Ellen: I need new adjectives for you. Best of the night.

My thoughts: It was another solid performance from Crystal. Not so sure she's the front runner but she's definitely one of them

Lilly Scott

Patsy Cline - Patsy Cline's Greatest Hits - I Fall to Pieces I Fall to Pieces

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: You were brave picking that song. It didn't have the wow factor.
Kara: I don't know how you did it but you made Patsy Cline sound current.
Randy: I thought it was hot and that you're in the zone right now.
Ellen: Love your voice and style. Love you.

My thoughts: No, no, no, no, no. What a horrible way to close out the show. I definitely wouldn't have picked that as the song to bid for a place in the Top 12 with.

The bottom three girls at Rickey.org were Lacey Brown, Michelle Delamor and Haeley Vaughn although Paige Miles wasn't too far behind in 4th place. For the guys who performed on Tuesday night it was Todrick Hall and Jermaine Sellers in an easy bottom two with Tim Urban, Aaron Kelly and John Park the next closest but assumed safe on the differences.

Top 20 girls take to the stage on American Idol 2010

Submitted by The Critic on Wed, 2010-03-03 19:12

After last night's switcheroo, the girls finally take to the stage to sing for your vote.  Last week they were the better of the two groups so it will be interesting to see if they can pull it off this week as well.

Here is the voting information.

Crystal Bowersox

20 Greatest Hits - Long As I Can See the Light Long As I Can See the Light

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: We totally underestimated you from last week.  That was a great song choice, and like Kelly Clarkson, I think we've found a great artist.
Kara: When you come out it's effortless.  You're centered and focused like the greats are. I think you hit a new level tonight.
Randy: I just love that you're not trying to be anybody else
Ellen: I am so glad you're here. Please stay healthy. We need you here.

My thoughts: Not too bad.  Obviously recovered from her "health concerns".

Haeley Vaughn

The Movie (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) - The Climb The Climb

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: In theory that should have worked.  It was a bit ironic because you kinda fell off.
Kara: You have people rooting for you at home but you need about a year to fine tune your instrument.
Randy: You can sing but it was excrutiating.
Ellen: Never stop smiling. I didn't think it really worked out for you though.

My thoughts: I thought that was actually a pretty good song for Haeley.  It was pitchy.

Lacey Brown

Sixpence None the Richer - Sixpence None the Richer - Kiss Me Kiss Me

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: Marginally better than last week but I feel you're taking part in a competition instead of showcasing yourself as an artist.
Kara: You have to step it up from here but that was a step in the right direction
Randy:
Ellen: I thought it was adorable

My thoughts: I have a bit of a connection with this song so hearing it on Idol was a bit exciting. However, I thought Lacey tried to over-sing it.

Katie Stevens

Corinne Bailey Rae - Girlfriends (The Soundtrack) - Put Your Record On Put Your Record On

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: It's very frustrating.  I think you need some experience and to tell us what kind of artist you want to be.  But people like you so you'll be around next week despite that not being a winning performance.
Kara: You were almost in the wrong key at the end of the song.  I'm really pulling for you.
Randy: When you went into your upper register it reminded me of the girl we saw earlier.
Ellen: You have a great voice and I liked it but I can't believe you're seventeen.

My thoughts: Despite choosing a recent song, she still sounds like an old soul.

Didi Benami

Bill Withers - The Best of Bill Withers - Lean on Me - Lean On Me Lean On Me

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: It was all over the place.  It was screechy.  Bad choice of song.  You're a cool artist but doing something generic was a missed opportunity.
Kara: It wasn't good.  What I'm missing from you is consistency. I was all over the place.
Randy: It wasn't a great choice for me
Ellen: I love your voice and you have a lovely energy but I think you should have done a different Bill Withers song.

My thoughts: Did confuses me.  She's got a great voice and image but her song choices are terrible.

Michelle Delamor

Greatest Hits - With Arms Wide Open With Arms Wide Open

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I think you struggled with some of the notes. You attempted to make a song your own.
Kara: My favorite performance of yours ever. You took a risk and I really appreciate that you're trying. I bought that.
Randy: A couple of pitch problems here and there. You look great though.
Ellen: I thought you did a lot with the song and for a moment I forgot it was a rock song.  It almost worked.

My thoughts: It started off well but when she got into it the wheels kinda fell off.

Lilly Scott

Sam Cooke - 30 Greatest Hits - Sam Cooke Portrait of a Legend 1951-1964 - A Change Is Gonna Come Change is Gonna Come

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I thought it was good but I wasn't as crazy about it as the others were. I thought Crystal was better than you though.
Kara: You just had your first moment in this competition and thank God you tried out. You are going to change the game.
Randy: You're definitely unique and that was my favorite performance of the night
Ellen: I was just a fan in a seat watching an amazing performance.

My thoughts: Lilly reminds me of Cyndi Lauper. It was a nice arrangement but I can't wait for her to take on some classic rock tunes.

Katelyn Epperly

Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head - The Scientist The Scientist

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: Almost identical to the Natasha Bedingfield version of the song. A million times better.
Kara: I love you. You are seriously good but figure out who you are real quick.
Randy: I really liked it but it was way slow.
Ellen: Way too slow. People can't vote if they're asleep.

My thoughts: I quite liked it as well but agreed that it may have been a tad too slow

Paige Miles

Kelly Clarkson - Breakaway - Walk Away Walk Away

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: I think you're getting lost in these songs and they're overtaking you.  If you nail it, you could be the one to beat.
Kara: I could see you having a hit with that song.
Randy: I'm not sure it worked for you.
Ellen: I loved it.  You have one of the best voices.

My thoughts: Excellent song choice. This could be my favorite performance of the night on American Idol. A little pitchy in the middle when she screamed but other than that, rocking!

Siobhan Magnus

30 Greatest Hits - Think Think

Voting Information

Judges comments:
Simon: Once again, you're such a strange person. You are interesting and very talented.
Kara: How do you hit those notes?!
Randy: You slayed it. I loved it.
Ellen: Most people would say don't take on such a big song but people said don't mix sleeves and a blanket and look at the snuggie.

My thoughts: Wow. Siobhan blew the roof off with that. Way to close out the show!

My bottom three from tonight would have been Katie Stevens, Michelle Delamor and Lacey Brown.  Tomorrow night it's the results show where four more contestants will be going home.

Catch us for live commentary tomorrow at 8/7c.
