American Idol Results 1 - Top 13 becomes the Top 11

Submitted by The Critic on Wed, 2009-03-11 19:10

It was the highest number of votes ever for this stage of the competition. A whopping 33 million votes!.

Here's what is happening. There have been a number of contestants who have left early. Chris Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson are two examples of such. This year, the judges have the option of not having an elimination for one week only. The following week, two people will be sent home instead.

The Top 13 perform a medley of hits of the Jackson 5.

After a recap of last nights show and the weekly Ford ad set to music, it's time for the results.

Michael Sarver is safe. Allison Iraheta is safe. Jasmine Murray is not safe. Matt Giraud is safe. Kris Allen is safe while Megan Corkery is not.

Jasmine is going home unless the judges save her while Megan is safe.

Jasmine sings but I doubt it's going to be enough. It's not and she's gone. She's all tears but she really shouldn't be surprized.

Kanye West icon performs Heartless on the American Idol stage. I'm not that fussed.

Back to the results. Scott MacIntyre is safe. Despite having a weird number, Alexis Grace is safe. Danny Gokey is, of course, safe. Anoop Desai is not safe.

Adam Lambert is safe, of course. Lil Rounds is safe but Jorge Nunez is joining Anoop in the middle of the stage.

Before the final result of the night, Ryan Seacrest tells us that each week they'll be bringing back one of the American Idol alumni. Tonight it's the original American Idol - Kelly Clarkson, singing My Life Would Suck Without You icon.

Leaving the show is Jorge Nunez unless the judges save him. I doubt it though. Simon Let's him down quickly.

As we see Jorge's journey, we hear the new American Idol 2009 Farewell Song

I understand Idol created

I understand Idol created the "judges" save to protect a contestant that has a bad week, either in their performance or in the vote. A better way, that would work all season long, and wouldn't involve the judges would be to use the sum of several weeks of votes, and the contestant with the lowest total goes off. This would allow a performer who had one bad week to recover, assuming they really should have stayed.

For instance, let's say we have 5 contestants remaining: A,B,C,D and E. Last week, the ordering was 1,2,3,4, and 5, respectively. Now, this week, we tally the votes, and because A had a bad week, the order is 5,1,2,3,4. So, the sum totals for the last two weeks were A: 1+5=6, B: 2+1=3, C: 3+2=5, D: 4+3=7, and E: 5+4=9. So, because A had one bad week, but was best the previous week, A stays. But, E, who had two bad weeks in a row goes home. The next week, suppose the order is B,A,C,D. So the totals are now A:6+2=8, B:3+1=4, C: 5+3=8, and D:7+4=11, so D goes home.

There are an infinite number of extensions of this approach. You can keep only the last two weeks (right now you keep only this week), or you can give more weight to the most current weeks, or a variety of other approaches. You'd likely also want to introduce a tie-breaker in case contestants both ended with the same rank, maybe the percent of vote totals for the last few weeks, since those are unlikely to result in a tie and are self-correcting for different numbers of voters.

The bottom line is this system always protects the higher achievers from one bad week, works every week of the contest and not just on that one week the judges think it should, and doesn't involve the judges, only the public.
