After the elimination show each week, cable channel Fox Reality will be screening "American Idol Extra", a closer look at the American Idol show with exit interviews from the eliminated contestant as well as trivia, behind the scenes info and what's happening with our old contestants.
The show is fronted by Ty Treadway and has Season 4 finalist, Mikalah Gordon and Season 3 finalist Matt Rogers assisting him with interviews etc.
Ty is standing on the stage with Melissa McGhee only moments after the elimination show had ended. Melissa says that she was kinda expecting it tonight but is so glad that she's done it and that it's been unreal and that she never thought it would happen but now she can go home to the beach.
Matt is loving being back on the Idol stage with all the tension and excitement that comes with a show where people are voted off. Both Matt and Mikalah made it through the first round of finals but went home at the second elimination. They are thankful that they'll be around for longer in this season of American Idol.
We recap the
Stevie Wonder performances of the Top 12 before Matt takes us backstage to talk with some of the celebrities who are fans of the show. Eric Millegan from Bones, Tori Spelling, Season 3 contestant John Peter Lewis and N'Sync member Lance Bass. Lance says that Simon's comments are usually right on. Tori says that there are some great performers but thinks that Paris, Taylor, Katharine and Chris are the best. Her advice is that "success is the best revenge". If Lance was performing a Stevie Wonder song it would have been
Overjoyed.
Season One finalist Nikki McKibbin asks a trivia question going into the break. Justin Guarini has a famous cousin. Who is it? Denzel Washington, Brian Austin Green, Samuel L. Jackson or Vin Diesel? The answer, is Samuel L. Jackson.
Ty is in the studio talking with Deborah Byrd, the vocal arranger and coach for the girls. Ty asks her how proud she was of everything Melissa accomplished. She says she was very proud but she's sure she didn't sleep well after she forgot her lyrics. Ty asks if that one mistake out her off for the rest of the show but Byrd says that she had taught her some acting things and that when you make a mistake you need to let it go and forget about it move forward and she thought she sang the rest of the song well. Ty asks how much influence Byrd has on the contestants song choice. She says that she suggests singers to listen to but she can't pick their songs for them. She talks about how Clay used to beg for her to blink if it was a good song choice and how Kelly wanted help in ending her song. Ty asks her who she thinks will win cause she should know being so close and on the inside but she says that she doesn't know and that it comes down to people voting. They talk about the first show a little and how they call it the first day of school.
Matt is backstage in the VIP tent with the cast of The Loop - another plug for a Fox show.
Justin Guarini is releasing a new Jazz record which is certainly different from the pop album he released after he was the runner up on American Idol Season One. He's using standards in his album but he's putting a different infusion of soul into it. He thought his first album didn't have a theme and was more of a throw it on the wall and see what sticks kinda album. He refers to his American Idol experience as entertainment 101 which was good but now he's ready to move on.
Ty reminds us that Justin has starred in a feature film, recorded his own album, started his own company and somehow me managed to find time to get a haircut.
Matt is backstage with Melissa's family. They are very proud of her. Her mom didn't think she'd be going home tonight but thought she'd be in the bottom after she forgot her words and if she'd sung like she did after being eliminated on the performance show then she'd probably still be here. Melissa arrives and Matt asks her what is going through her mind right now. Emotionally she says she is happy to be seeing her family. Matt reminds her that the journey is just begun. Melissa's mom says that there have been people from the past that have been turning up now that Melissa has become famous.
Going into the Adbreak, American Idol contestant from Season 4 Anthony Federov has another tivia question. There were only two American Idol winners that were able to avoid being in the bottom 3 for the entire competition. Who were they? The answer of course is Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
Last season's runner up, Bo Bice has released an album The Real Thing and we get a bit of a look behind the scenes at his first video. Bo asks whether he's going to be liked or just remembered as the guy from Idol and is grateful for being the guy who was sitting on the couch to performing to more than 40million people to working in the studio with some great performers. Bo tells us about how his position as a celebrity has enabled him to help those from his home in Alabama who were affected by hurricane katrina. He said they spent two days working on the music video but he hardly felt like he was working because he loves it and he felt like being a little kid again.
Mikalah gives us the goss of what's happening with Idol. She tells us that after Idol, she never got to go to prom after being so busy so Simon never had the opportunity to take her. Season Two's Kimberley Locke is now the new spokesmodel for Lane Bryants new clothing line that will be debuting this summer. Josh Gracin is touring the US. Last week George Huff from Season Two performed at the New Orleans arena at the Celebration of Hope concert. Amy Adams has picked up a role in the musical Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Next up is Melissa McGhee's first sit down interview. Pre ads trivia: Did you know that Melissa McGhee's First Solo Singing Perforamance was in a pageant at age 7?
We get to see Melissa's audition details and when we first met her. She performed
Can't Fight The Moonlight for her audition and she has a horse stuffed toy named moose.
Ty asks her how it feels watching her audition back. She says that it feels like it was ages ago because that was the first audition of many before you actually make it to the finals and that she was really nervous but she was 15 million times more nervous last night but the nervousness last night was to remember the words.
Melissa tells us that she gargles with Olive Oil. She thinks that the whole new environment with the big stage and audience was just a bit too much and may have put her off her game. She says that a lot of the people back stage had said that if they'd forgotten their words they probably would have stopped and burst into tears.
In response to Simon's comment that it was her best performance, Melissa says that her farewell performance was probably her best performance of the series despite it being tough to fight back all that emotion.
Melissa says that she really misses Heather Cox the most and it's going to be weird being by herself after being with 13 other people for ages.
We take a look back at Melissa's American Idol journey from the last four months. Ty asks how much she's grown as an artist from the experience. Melissa says that she never thought a career was possible but now she has so many opportunities. She says she wouldn't change anything other than perhaps remebering her lyrics.
She'll miss the whole stage thing with having fans and performing and all the friends that she has made from being on American Idol. Melissa isn't sure where she is heading now but she wants to stick around in the entertainment industry.
Melissa tells us that backstage everyone is practicing their songs before the show starts and they all pray together. Some of them have a bit of a jog but everyone has their own way to prepare.
