American Idol Episode 31 - Top 7 Elimination Review

Submitted by The Critic on Wed, 2006-04-19 18:53.

What a great show last night's American Idol American Songbooks was. Everyone stepped up and delivered but unfortunately for one of them, not quite enough. Before we find out who is joining the jury, oh hang on, wrong show - anyway... let's check out our weekly review of our American Idol Polls.

Despite his new look, Ace Young (3%) finds himself firmly at the bottom of your favourites as you pick to go this week. The gap between the bottom three is usually close but this week Ace is at the bottom quite clearly. Finding herself in the bottom three for the first time though is Kellie Pickler (6%) which should be much of a surprize to her after her self confessed butching of her song. Finally, Paris Bennett (7%) continues her bottom of the pack run rounding out our three.

Katharine McPhee (31%) takes the lead for the first time as your favourite with Chris Daughtry (24%) in second with Taylor Hicks (21%) a close third. Elliott Yamin (8%) languishes towards the bottom in the 4th place.

When it comes down to who you want to see go home Ace Young (42%) is by far your preferred contestant to be eliminated. Kellie Pickler (30%) is second and Paris Bennett (10%) rounds out your three.

Stay tuned for details as they come to hand.

Tonight Rod Stewart Rod Stewart is performing. He is singing Rod Stewart - It Had to Be You...The Great American Songbook - The Way You Look Tonight The Way You Look Tonight which was supposedly the song that Katharine McPhee wanted to sing but Rod tore up during their rehearsal because he was going to sing it.

Next week's theme on American Idol is Classic Love Songs and the idols will be coached by Andrea Bocelli Andrea Bocelli.

Safe: Taylor Hicks, Kellie Pickler, Elliott Yamin, Katharine McPhee

Bottom Three: Chris Daughtry, Paris Bennett

Going home: Ace Young

Guess me (not verified) Wed, 2006-04-19 22:17

Gosh, I want Kellie Pickler and Taylor Hicks at the bottom 3. Chris doesnt deserve to be at the bottom 3 coz he should be in the final 3. What are you thinking americans, so dumb!!!!!!

Anony (not verified) Wed, 2006-04-19 23:29

Are you kidding me. ARE YOU KIDDING ME.
Ace deserved to go. But Kellie SAFE?
I can't bear to watch this isht anymore.
IDIOTS IDIOTS IDIOTS. I'm surrounded.

Bobby Sue (not verified) Wed, 2006-04-19 23:59

Ok...Paris and Ace I can understand, but CHRIS DAUGHTRY???!!! Kellie Pickler deserved to be in that bottom three and everyone watching that episode knew it.  Are Chris Daughtry fans so sure of his potential win that they became complacent and didn't vote??!!

Although Katherine McPhee was clearly the winner this past week, that doesn't warrant such a turn-around in public perception.  She certainly hasn't received the glowing praise and the rave reviews that Chris Daughtry has right from the beginning.

I worry for Chris Daughtry because I can see him "blowing" it again next week for love songs.  Give the guy a break people.  Remember, Rod Stewart himself was a "rocker" before he won a grammy for those "standards" he's so famous for now.

Personally, I didn't find Rod Stewart's performance on the elimination show that moving and I cannot for the life of me figure out why he's so popular for doing that type of music.  The thing that keeps going through my mind is that Chris Daughtry has that same "raspy" quality to his voice that Rod Stewart does in his.  Thirty-five years from now, Chris may very well be doing that same type of music and people will be falling all over themselves for it.  Sounds like a long time I know, but I can remember listening to Rod Stewart's hit song "Hot Legs" as a teenager in 1976 on my RECORD PLAYER and now Rod Stewart is famous for STANDARDS??!!

Don't judge a book by its cover.  Chris Daughtry is young yet, but he will withstand the test of time.

If love songs is the theme next week, and IF they are allowed to choose their own songs and not a specific set of songs, Chris Daughtry might want to check out a song by Frankie Goes to Hollywood called "The Power of Love".  Chris could knock one out of the stadium if he did that one well.

Keep up the good work, Chris Daughtry!  You are a winner no matter what the outcome on American Idol.

haha people i think of america i think u sorted voted correctly.Mi favourites are katherine, paris and kellie. also mandissa and lisa were my favourites and they should hav gotten further then they did. i fort katherine would win, 2nd lisa, 3rd paris, 4th kellie and 5th mandissa. Lisa will become an amazing singer 1 day any way and she is such a beautiful gurl. i would of taken paris out of the bottom 3 and put elliot in there. katherine is not gona get eliminated kuz she will be the next american idol. Kellie must have a pretty big fan base. kellie is an amazing singer and has the pop idol look so does katherine. heres my prediction and what i want to happen...
6th- elliot
5th Taylor
4th- chris
3rd- Kellie

Yep, Ace deserved to go. I could never see him making an album that anyone would buy. Katherine is too annoying. She's beautiful, but she knows it and flaunts it. I hope she doesn't win. She'll do ok without being the next idol. I like Elliott. Down to earth, great voice, all-around good guy.

aya (not verified) Thu, 2006-04-20 03:45

awww.....y ace? he sort of deserved it after tuesday's performance but he's performed really well before. I think paris is the best by far! she's in a totally different league to everyone else. i love elliote. really great guy, great voice and doesn't put on an act, totally cool! i think taylor better watch out. keep the dancing going or you'll be going. i love all the idols. may the best one win!

Unfortunately this show really isn't about the most deserving vocalist. There are five OUTSTANDING vocalists remaining with Mandisa gone. Elliot, Katherine, Chris, Taylor and Paris.

I see Katherine as a Broadway star rather than an idol. She will end up there no matter what (movies too, no doubt). Of course she could have been Miss America or Miss Universe as well.

Although Paris is obviously gifted, her genre (Billy Holliday stylings, which I love) doesn't quite suit the 'image' of an idol.

Chris excels as a heavy rocker unequivokly, but that attracts a rather diminished percentage of public appeal.

I absolutely ADORE Taylor. He is the consummate performer, dripping with charisma as well as inate TALENT (love him). But again, his genre, bluesy soul, might reduce his chances of fullfilling the idol image.

Now we arrive at Elliot... He possesses the most versatile voice by far in this competition. Elliot has proven to be the master of every genre. Admittedly he lacks confidence, which I'm convinced would be overcome if he were to win. Image makers would have a field day with him. Elliot exemplifies a strong connection to every song. He is vulnerable and sensitive when the music dictates and is humble and grounded. What a treat to give America an idol who not only has superior 'pipes' but exemplifies a happy family man!

Why not take this opportunity to show Hollywood that we admire raw talent and aren't so shallow as to demand physical perfection. (Seriously look at the character of some of those 'physically perfect' people! This title is afterall called American IDOL.

My opinion of Kellie is that she has true vocal potential limited to country. But in all honesty, my perception is that she is a phony. I don't buy the 'dumb blonde' and see it as 'gimmicky'.

With this said, I believe each and every one of these individuals are truly gifted artists and with or without the win, will excel in music. They will become household names. They were all blessed with an enormous break.

Mandisa, you are not forgotten and I have no doubt we'll be seeing you as well.

So this is how it ends .i think that kelly has touhgt us a valuable lesson this week that u  can get away with doin the worst worst worst performance of the night still ened up in top4 just bcos u have a deaf fan base u can count on who will vote 4 u even if u appear their & do the same excuses like"I'm SOO SORRY****"(YEAAAAK) i can not sing today becos these songs ar too big for me.I think she just did that this  week and wow! america is so heart broken for this little fakey, and i m not be surpriced if she would  do the same next week maybe over & over to win this thing .so chris ,tayler, katherine pls! forget about winning this and do ur own thing becos when america hear u over the radio (becos then u wont see only hear) they will understand how dumb they were all together with kelly too.

Bullen (not verified) Thu, 2006-04-20 14:27

You forgot to write Andrea Bocelli at the end of the review.

Aaron. Thu, 2006-04-20 22:36

This mayve been a plan.

Which reminds me of when Vonzell got taken out, but she still making an album and signed to a record label. Maybe the same is in the loop for lil Fantasia, Paris Bennett?

Chris was in the bottom 3 because his rendition of What a Wonderful World was boring.  Although it was a change from his rocker roots, (like that would help) I've seen commercials with more entertaining lymerics.  It sadly lacked......anything substantial.  He needs to stay on course with the rocker sounds...which is how his voice became the initial front runner.  I'm disgusted with the fact that Kellie Pickler didnt make bottom 3 with a unamimous failure in Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered.  I've read about her singing competions and beauty pagents and have forsaken her as phoney, but I dont think the majority of viewers know this.  They are still in love with the country bumpkin attituted, and I'm not over it either.  She has a presence that keeps you eager for the next funny, stupid thing she's gonna do or say.  Kudos for acting the fool, brilliantly.  I'd say Chris's unique voice or lack thereof this week has put him in the bottom 3 and Kellie's failure but continuing on-stage presence has put her in the top 4.  As for the others, Elliott and Paris who?.  Elliott can sing but he hasnt brought anything unique to the table besides overcoming stuggles growing up...or is that unique at all?  Sadly who can really identify with Paris...she has as many personalities as hairdoos.  Taylor is a mean machine with a big fan base.  I admit the guy has energy and can sing although it hasn't been fireworks for me.  Katharine is still my favorite, purely on voice.  I've haven't enjoyed all her performances, but damn, she can sing good or bad songs great.

Jordan1 (not verified) Fri, 2006-04-21 00:21

Chris's voice was definatetly off.   Although the song was sung well...it didnt even sound like Chris singing till the ending.  All his previous performances including his slow country meadly had his unique tone but the beginning of wonderful world sounded like a different vocalist was singing.

All of you who make so much fun of Pickler and hate her so much because you think she is dumb and because you believe anything you read about her on the internet (duh), listen up....  before you post any more remarks, good or bad, please take a refresher course in spelling.  You are irritating my  IQ of 163 and I am a Kentucky girl and I have all of my teeth.

The Critic Wed, 2006-04-19 19:44

unlikely pal

The Critic Wed, 2006-04-19 20:38

Katharine wasn't in the bottom three... it was Paris, Ace and Chris

Kimbagirl (not verified) Thu, 2006-04-20 20:16

Stop and think about what happened last night.  There is no way Chris nor Paris was in the bottom three.  I honestly think AI wanted to make it more exciting and keep everyone guessing.  What excitement would there of been, at the end, if the true bottom three were together?  How do we the fans know how many votes were cast.  It is just a number, AI can say Chris and Paris are in the bottom three.  How would we know?  If AI wants Kelly Pickler to win, she will win even if it is just her granddaddy voting.  I will continue to vote for Chris, as I do think he is the best singer on AI this year.   I  will not be getting my hopes up that he will be the next Idol, because I do not have much faith in the integrety of AI.
