American Idol 2007 Episode 32 - Top 6 Performance Show Review

Submitted by The Critic on Tue, 2007-04-24 19:20.

Welcome to the first of the Idol Gives Back shows. Oh, and it's top six night too.

Tonight, our contestants have chosen inspirational songs or "Life Anthems". This really should be a good show as the songs each contestant is singing are likely to be ones that mean a lot to them. I'm certainly expecting to see some really emotive performances tonight.

Contestant: Chris Richardson

Song Choice: Eric Clapton - Eric Clapton: The Best of - Clapton Chronicles - Change the World Change the World
Ringtone: Jamster
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5701 & 1 866 436 5707

I really like this song. It's well suited to Chris and it's a great way to open the show. This might just be shaping up to be a really good night of quality entertainment on American Idol for a change. :)

Contestant: Melinda Doolittle

Song Choice: Faith Hill - Breathe - There Will Come a Day There Will Come a Day
Ringtone: Jamster
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5702 & 1 866 436 5708

It should come as no surprise to hear Melinda performing something Gospel tonight. Certainly the genre she's most comfortable with and a reasonably good performance from her. I'll let her off for sounding the same though this week since it's one of those shows where you really do need to put your best "self" out there.

Contestant: Blake Lewis

Song Choice: Beatle Jazz - With a Little Help from Our Friends - Imagine Imagine
Ringtone: Jamster
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5703 & 1 866 436 5709

From one religious song to one that mentions the end of religion. This song is legendary and while the performance didn't really offer anything new, it was still a solid performance.

Contestant: Lakisha Jones

Song Choice: Fantasia - I Believe - EP - I Believe I Believe
Ringtone: Jamster
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5704 & 1 866 436 5710

After all the performances that Lakisha has given us that may have proved she can sing, this one only made one statement - I am no Fantasia Barino.

Contestant: Phil Stacey

Song Choice: Steven Curtis Chapman - Speechless - The Change The Change
Ringtone: Jamster
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5705 & 1 866 436 5711

I actually really liked this performance by Phil. I thought it had some really nice moments and his tone was really good as well. My only frustration is that from week to week, Phil is kind of a hit and miss contestant. Some weeks he's on. Some weeks he's not.

Contestant: Jordin Sparks

Song Choice: Barbra Streisand - The Essential: Barbra Streisand - You'll Never Walk Alone You'll Never Walk Alone
Ringtone: Jamster
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5706 & 1 866 436 5712

Jordin is a sweet kid but this performance didn't do it for me. She was pitchy the whole way through and despite the fact that the make up room is doing their best to pretty her up, her singing just wasn't on par this week at all.

A few points about this weeks show:

  • Voting lines are open for 4 hours
  • News Corp, which owns Fox, will donate 10cents per call up to 50 million.

Another interesting week in Idol. Who will be going home? Will our poll be right?

Who was your favourite? What did you think of tonight's show? Make sure you vote in our poll.

Melinda is the most talented (Jordin high in second, dont get me wrong), and i hope she makes it to the finale and hopefully win this. But what makes me mad is that alot of people vote and watch the show, yet no one buys their CD. Melinda and everyone else except Blake, their style wont get them very far, but Blake is young and can do pop music and such, and he will probably do well. This is what gets to me the most. Its almost like why are people watching the show than. They can dial for 2 hours but cant move their butts to go the the store and buy their album. hahahha

From the very beginning I've been voting for Jordin. She's already won some other TV talent search ("America's Most Talented Kids" at age 15 I think) and there's no reason she can't do well on Idol. Most of the time she delivers great performances, however Melinda is (honestly) more talented. The end results? Most likely 1st - Melinda ; 2nd - Jordin ; 3rd - Blake

For this season, just like last season, I think the one who will win is not the one that's deserving. Yes, Melinda is the most deserving winner. But she should excel in many genres. She shouldn't stick with her "comfort zone" -the gospel and r&B- just to play safe. Was Taylor Hicks the most deserving last year? Nope. Chris Daughtry was. But Chris could only muster and I must say excel too in his comfort zone- "rock" Smiling

Now, to objectively pick who'll win this time around, i think it will be either Jordin or Bake. Jordin excelled in country and adult contemporaries like "Inspirationals". which are not her forte. She's a pop girl! but she flunked Latin lol. Ok ok C- for the soulful Latin hehe.

And Blake, he excel in remixes and oldies remakes for pop consumption! His forte is of course beatbox and dance, which btw he also excel in.

Yes melinda is the most deserving,Though she has been sticking to the same kind of songs, she still sings them perfectly well. For Jordin she over performs.Blake tries but i still have a strong feeling that america will vote Melinda

Blake is not that great of singer. Last night was so lame; didn't move me what's so ever.
The Jordin pimping was so over the top for such a not over the top performance. Pitchy and screechy much?
My favorite was and will continue to be Chris regardless of what others are saying. I look forward to him each week and the "NASALLY" singing. I think his future will be bright.

I think Lakisha's gonna be sent home tonight.

I dont totally agree with you.Lakisha is a good singer, though her performance wasnt the best,to me it was still better than that of Jordin.I think chris or phil will be sent home

Seems to me the top three are stacking up to be Melinda, Blake and Jordin...possibly in that order. I think Melinda is most deserving, but the female vote may put Blake over the top in the end. No matter, all three are going to have great careers ahead if they want them.
