American Idol 2007 Episode 28 - Top 8 Performance Review

Submitted by The Critic on Tue, 2007-04-10 18:04

After coming second top of the polls two weeks ago, last week Gina Glocksen had a shocker and choked to put herself on the chopping block last week and home she went.

Tonight, Jennifer Lopez Jennifer Lopez is coaching our contestants through this weeks Latin Theme. I'll be interested to see how Lakisha Jones does this week. She's been on a downward spiral for a while now and having to perform Latin certainly isn't on her side. Perhaps she'll be able to prove me wrong and knock it out of the park.

I might be a bit delayed in getting the details up this week so feel free to post your thoughts below.

Contestant: Melinda Doolittle

Song Choice: Dean Martin - Dino - The Essential Dean Martin - Sway Sway
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5701

Not the best from Melinda this week. Obviously not her genre. And she's starting to catch Lakisha's boring bug of doing the same thing every week.

Contestant: Lakisha Jones

Song Choice: Gloria Estefan - Gloria Estefan: Greatest Hits - Conga Conga
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5702

I'm sorry, but I just can't handle this. While it's better than some of her other weeks, this just doesn't work for her.

Contestant: Chris Richardson

Song Choice: Santana & Rob Thomas - Supernatural - Smooth Smooth
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5703

This song sounds a little too low for Chris this week. Very much a song suited to Chris but it wasn't that flash for me.

Contestant: Haley Scarnato

Song Choice: Gloria Estefan - Gloria Estefan: Greatest Hits, Vol. 2 - Turn the Beat Around Turn the Beat Around
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5704

Legs is back. That wasn't too bad from Haley tonight. Not sure it will be enough to save her from the bottom three though.

Contestant: Phil Stacey

Song Choice: Santana & The Product G&B - Supernatural - Maria Maria Maria Maria
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5705

Surely this is Phil Stacey's week to go home. That was pretty awful.

Contestant: Jordin Sparks

Song Choice: Gloria Estefan - Gloria Estefan: Greatest Hits - Rhythm Is Gonna Get You Rhythm Is Gonna Get You
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5706

Very much Jordin's home. I actually liked her this week.

Contestant: Blake Lewis

Song Choice: Marc Anthony - Marc Anthony - I Need to Know I Need to Know
Voting Numbers: 1 866 436 5707

Solid vocal performance from Blake but a little boring for me. I would have thought that this week would have been a fantastic opportunity to really show off.

Contestant: Sanjaya Malakar

Song Choice: Diana Krall - The Look of Love - Besame Mucho Bésame Mucho
Voting Number: 1 866 436 5708

Wow! That was actually pretty good from Mr Malakar this week.

An interesting week in Idol. Who will be going home? Will our poll be right?

Who was your favourite? What did you think of tonight's show? Make sure you vote in our poll.

It's not easy to sing latin

It's not easy to sing latin songs. I know this very well coz I'm a latin lover. So, based on last night performance everybody deserves a credit especially Blake. If I had to choose the bottom three, they would be Phil, Haley, Chris although I always want Sanjaya to go home and I would be very happy to see him got eliminated (I hate myself for being so mean like this). What do you think???

Go Blake! Way to step it up

Go Blake! Way to step it up and prove you belong! Having a tough time picking the bottom 3-- Phil, Haley & Chris or Phil, Haley & Lakisha. Does Lakisha have enough fan base to stay out of the bottom 3? Wonder what your thoughts are....

Simon is right-Melinda and

Simon is right-Melinda and Lakisha need to do something new. They are getting boring. The more I watch the more I think Blake may actually pull this off. He is creative, unique, and shows a new side every week. He may not belt it out like some of the others, but his overall musical talent is evident.

If everyone would stop

If everyone would stop hating on Sanjaya long enough to notice, he gets better and better each week. This is just a kid. Don't forget that he really blew us away in the auditions. The reason being: no one was bad mouthing him and lowering his confidence. I had faith that he would do good last night and he did. J-Lo even said that she really likes Sanjaya. Face it, her vocal skills aren't the best but she's a good performer. Everyone needs someone to believe in them.

Totally agree with

Totally agree with everything Big Man just said.
Is it just me though or does Sanjaya sound better in Spanish than in English?
Honestly without trying to be funny I seriously think he sounds tolerable in Spanish.

Wow, what a disappointing

Wow, what a disappointing show tonight. It's as if most everyone went out and partied til 4am. I agree with Simon that there was no progression this week save for Blake's "I Need To Know". Latin sensibilities are so much about attitude and delivery...it was nice to hear how Blake effectively "attacked" the words and turned out to be the only one IMO who really fully "got it". Chris was just lost. Why he picked a song where he stayed in his weaker lower register I'll never know, but "Smooth" was the kiss of death for him. Lakisha tried but lost more ground this week. Phil and Haley both turned in weak performances. Melinda was Melinda, but without coming up with some modern twist to her vocal stylings (and yes, appearance) she's gonna have a tough go of it in the race to the finals. And finally...is Sanjaya the Perry Como of the times..KIDDING!! - see ya
