After the girls showed the guys up last week on American Idol, this week the roles were reversed. Last week the Idolblog polls hit three out four in the who was going home stakes so how will we do this week?

From the guys, Nick Pedro and Brandon Rogers only managed to score 2% of the vote each leaving them languishing at the bottom of the poll. Jared Cotter and AJ Tabaldo came in next both on 4%. Topping the poll was the beat-boxing Blake Lewis on 28% with both Chris Sligh and Chris Richardson grabbing 16% each and Sundance Head earning 14% of the vote rounding out all the contestants to reach double digits. Dial Idol had the same bottom two but Chris Richardson came in surprisingly in third last spot.

From the girls, Alaina Alexander only managed a dismal 1% of the vote with Leslie Hunt coming in second last with 3% and Stephanie Edwards not too far behind. Last week Lakisha Jones dominated with 58% of the vote but this week it was all about Melinda Doolittle. Melinda topped the poll with 46% with Lakisha shedding more than half her support down to 20%. These two are clearly the favourites with none of the other girls reaching double digits. DialIdol results had Gina Glocksen at the bottom with Stephanie Edwards in second last place. Leslie Hunt came in third to last.

i disagree that AJ has going home, it's singing competition not about "sex appeal" come on guys, "make a smart choice" you don't wanna be an "american idiot"

I would like to open up a discussion on this blog on the American Idol results scheme.

I have had a theory about the last few seasons of American Idol. It sure looks to me (from results and comments) that each judge, and the producers, get a cover vote, an "exemption vote," to protect someone a judge or a producer wants to keep on the show despite the votes.

Last year, Elliott, I felt, got covered votes a LOT.

If you still have Thursday, 3/1/2007's episode on your PVR, watch what happened between AJ and Sanjaya. The judges all said that Sanjaya didn't do very well with the Michael Jackson schtick. One could believe that it wouldn't resonate with the American public either; and the vocals were abysmal.

On the results show, with two contestants of different ethnicities, one (AJ) was praised by all three judges for his performance; and one (Sanjaya) was panned by all three judges.

How does the one who sang well get voted out? There's got to be a protection vote between judges and the producers that sidesteps the vote tallies in an effort to add more drama or appease a particular fan base.

When the judges had to comment on AJ leaving the show, Simon was strangely silent on the boys (and AJ in particular) about the process--almost like he didn't want to lie; yet with the girls, he's the FIRST to say (and support) that Americans decide who stays. "You've got to vote for who you want to have stay." Is there special treatment for the low-vote-getter that producers and judges want to have stay?

When Paula commented about AJ, she said, "Truthfully, this is a singing competition; but I don't think tonight reflects that." Nice dodge on the voting issue.

When Randy commented, he didn't mention the vote either; he said, "I dunno about tonight, Dawg, I think AJ kinda blew it out of the box the other night, I thought he really showed off his skills. You know man, just keep on trucking, maybe this isn't the train for you, Dawg."

This segment has "producer exemption vote" written all over it.

Even Sanjaya was shocked beyond belief; clearly, he didn't know how this happened because the judges comments resonated with him. AJ was in complete shock after the glowing reviews he got. He almost had a look on his face like something was up.

What do y'all think? With 32 million people voting, how could Sanjaya have done better?

It's kinda simple really.. who are the people that vote the most on American Idol? It's the teenage girls! Sure, AJ had the better voice, but the 17 year old kid is going to get more votes from the swooning teeny boppers. Unlucky for AJ.

Sure it's a singing competition, but it's oh so also about sex appeal.

Boooooooooo Hisssssssssss...AJ went home!

That's a bummer, I thought he would definitely make it another week after his performance. =(
